The OEM BF Goodrich Radial TAs on my X are showing some sidewall cracking at 32K miles. With 9/32 tread left, I'm thinking of taking them in under a pro-rated warranty.

Currently, I run the stock 265/75 R16s, and tow a 8K trailer almost exclusivly with the truck. So far, I've never had any issues with my setup. The only issue I ever had was more my fault than the tires, when I started to sink in sand on South Padre Island beach on skinny tires set at 75 PSI.

Anyways, Im thinking of new tires, and thinking of the following choices:

Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo
BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO
Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor

Any thoughts on my choices, based on the fact it is for towing? I'll stay with E rated tires for safety and sway control, so I'm not interested in any D rated tires.

Also, what are your thoughts of putting on 285/75R16? Will I have any wheel rub on turns? I'm gussing that this would add 1 inch to my overal height and 1.5 inches in tire width. With that extra width I'm also guessing my mileage bay get a hit. Are my guesses correct? Keep in mind that my truck is stock height, with no lifts of any sort.

Thanks,

Kevin

All three of those tire choices are top-notch. I think the decision may lay in the best price, best looking, preferred tread pattern.

You will actually only get about a 1/2" gain in height as the new size is a 32.8" diameter tire versus the stocker's 31.6".

The width is only about a 1/2" difference, too. 16.4 (285s) vs. 15.8 (265s)...Unless, I calculated something wrong.

Never heard of 285's rubbing and the PSD can more than make up for the increased rolling resistance and lowering of the final drive ratio. Don't think the hit will be too bad. Depends on the type of driving you do. Do you spend half or more of the time at a fairly steady pace on the highway?

Don't forget to add Michelin LTX to the list,we just put a set of their 285's on back in July and they have been outstanding!!

The Wrangler Silent Armors was our very close second choice

Thanks guys.

I use my mostly for towing an 8K trailer on the highway, but that does have some in town driving occasionaly.

What do you guys think of putting on 285/75R16 on the stock 16x7 rims? All the tire recomendations I read say the min for that size is a 7.5 in wide rim, preferably 8.

With that said, My main concern in for towing manners (sway control) and handling. both highway and slow speeds in town. Revos dont come in E range in 285s. The Michelins BF Goodrich, and Goodyears do. So If I wanted to go to 285s in E, those are my choices.

Much more choices if stay with 265s. Cheaper and I'd be able to keep the Stock BF goodrich 265 Spare...

Kevin, the 285 BFG TKO's I had mounted on the stock rims must have been the toughest combination to get a balance out of and got worse and worse as the miles was put on them.

If you go with the 285 size tire I highly recommend purchasing 16x8 rims to mount them on.

I put the new Michelin LTX 285's on a sweet set of Eagle 058's from Tomzwheels

The fit and finish is Excellent.

If you put 285's on instead of 265's, won't that throw off you speedometer? If my calculations are correct, your speedometer will read slow...(ie. your actual speed will be faster than what your speedometer reads). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

When we had the stock 265's on the Excursion the speedo was off -2 mph (65 odo 63 on GPS) we put the 285's on then the speedo and GPS numbers paired right up.

We just put a set of Yokohama Geolandar HT-S, 265/75R16, Load E on our Excursion and we have been very happy with them so far! $649 out the door.

I put 285 Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's on my stock rims and I've been very happy with them. I pull 10k pounds of firewood in my dump trailer on a regular basis. The tires have great traction without making a lot of noise on the highway. I don't see where the stock rims are any problem at all with the tires going up one size.
