Well, it has finally happened to me....the alternator in our 2005 PSD Ex. went bad. I am replacing it myself, as the stealership wanted $515!!

I bought the alternator for $255 directly from Ford. Sheeze, $260 to install an alternator?!?!

WOW on both parts.Thats still a lot for an Alternator, you can get high output ones gor that.I just replaced the one in my Ex cant see how a dealership could charge for more than 20 minutes of work and still feel like they are good people.

It takes time to pull the vehicle into the garage, park it, get out, open the tool box, open the alternator box, open the hood, do the replacement, test-drive, park the vehicle, and do paperwork! Said and done, that's at least 3+ hours of work!!

Why wasn't this covered under the 3 yr / 36k mile warranty?

Because we have 48,000 miles! Yes, it would have been covered, but we are past the mileage.

Took me about 30 minutes to replace the alternator, and she is running like a champ! As for the Alternator price....NAPA, PepBoys, etc. were all in the $250 range, so I figured might as well go with a Ford part for $255.

So...in the last month I have put in $290 for Rancho Shocks, $650 for new tires (Yokohama Geolandars HT-S), and now $255 for the alternator.....this truck should be good to go for the next 50,000 miles!

I'm glad I bought the 6 year 100k mile extended warranty!

Does your Ford alternator come with a lifetime warranty like Autozone and Napa come with?

I had to replace the alternator on my 2000 X. Went to O'Reiley got a lifetime Alternator. It was a little cheaper at $179.99 with a $50 core charge. This was one of the easiest alternators to change.

Man I can't remember where the 6.0L alternator is located on the engine but I do agree the 7.3L is a snap to do
