I have seen some pics that seem to show the third row either gone or perhaps really, really flat when folded, and it almost looks like it is pretty much pushed all the way forward into the space where the second row must have been before it was folded up. Is that the case, or can you actually remove the third row completely? |

You can completely remove the 3rd row seat.
1.) Use the level on the right-hand side of the seat to fold the back of the seat down to make the seat flat.
2.) On the bottom of the seat at the floor on the back, there is a lever (covered by carpet) that you simply pull up on that releases the latch for the seat. Lift the seat up and pull back.
This is not a great picture, but at least shows you the location of this lever. It's the only pic I have of the back, but the little "hump" in the floor mat is for the lift lever to remove the seat:

I believe you are mistaken. Greywolf2112 is shopping for an X or 'burb and is gathering info. JohnBoy, who has two (not 'to') X's knows perfectly well how to fold & remove his seats.

That's a glovebox, and there should be a latch on it with which one gains access.
If you're talking about the section of the dashboard with what appears to be a hook sticking out, well that's it ... a hook ... one on which one can hang a trash bag. BTW, it doesn't open.
Above the hook, you should find your combination cup-holder ashtray. (What a wimpy lil' ashtray for a vehicle of this size.) It also has a handle which can be pulled rearward to gain access to the ashtray, and to deploy the cup-holders.
The only other compartment I can think of contains the airbag. You do not want to mess with that thing. Those things can break an arm when deployed. I've removed a few in other vehicles, and ALWAYS followed the factory removal instructions. Still, they scare me ... but I must admit I've wanted to hook one to up a couple leads and "set it off" out in the yard just to watch it deploy.
Please excuse the excessive use of the word "deploy" in this post. |

Landyot, you're sounding like someone who just, er, deployed a large floating airport/city thingy for kids to play on.
Tip of the day to you daring seat removal types: Note that there are wheels under the seat for easy rolling once unlatched (do not tow behind vehicle, with or without people on it). And be sure to unlatch the rear door stoppers to get the door out of the way BEFORE you try and get the seat out anyway and angle it and twist it and scratch the side plastic interior and throw out your back. And remember to latch the stoppers up again before slamming the doors shut and hearing that awful sound telling you that you need to find the little bottle of touch-up paint. Again.
Oh, and make sure to buy two Husky cargo liners, one small and one large. Not on eBay, the shipping costs more than the liner. Every local accessory shop carries them or can get them.
The small one fits perfectly behind the 3rd-row (3R) seat when it's in.
The large one fits when the 3R seat is out.
Both go in when the 3R seat is out and the 2R bench is folded flat, for complete cargo area coverage.
At least my carpet is in good shape. |
