My Ex has recently been having "throttle" problems. I've been experiencing the same problems that I found listed by another user on this site. This next paragraph was written by bigfoot567, but it describes my situation exactly.

"The throttle response seems to act really erratic at low RPMs while cruising along on flat road at around 30 - 35 MPH. Wants to surge up for a sec, then drop down and all the while I'm keeping the pedal motionless just to maintain even speed. Other times it seems like it wants to die, but doesn't. I noticed when I'm coasting up to a red light from 35 mph speedsor so, if I shift into nuetral the engine revs up for about a second then settles down to where it should be. "

My Ex also just stalled tonight when I was driving approx 25 mph. I lost power and as I pulled over I was able to restart. It hasn't stalled again, yet!

Reading this site for a couple hours tonight pointed me towards the CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor), but this was only listed for the Diesel engines. I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue with the 6.0L V10? Was it the CPS?

Please forgive me if this is an ignorant question because I don't know much about the Ex except how to change the oil.

Any input is much appreciated. I've taken the Ex to a Local Ford Dealership 4 times and I've only managed to spend money for repairs that have not resolved the issue.

Hi, neighbor, and welcome to the X-files.

My '01 V10 X stalled once like that, but did not exhibit the other symptoms. IMHO, I would look at all of the engine's vacuum lines for a leak. Next, I would examine each vacuum-operated device for leaks. Other vehicles that gave me erratic idle problems were always vacuum related ... including one EGR tube that was connected to the intake manifold that leaked.

I'll assume the dealer looked at all the electronic goodies that keep the engine operating ... and I would hope they already considered the vacuum lines.

There are a number of things that can cause the problem you describe. The crank position sensor could be one but is not known to fail on the V10. I've NEVER heard of one in my 5 years of owning one (two actually) and talking with other owners around the country.

First off, let's get some particulars about your truck.

Year (not that big a deal really...)
Mileage
Last fuel filter change
Last air filter change
Last PCV & hose change
Last tranny fluid change
Does it always surge every time you drive it?

Have you only stalled once?? Your post made it seem that way but you said it has been in the shop 4 times for this. Is that correct? 4 times for this stalling problem? What has the Ford dealer done to it so far?

Vacuum leak certainly doesn't sound too far off base. But I would also suspect (off the top of my head) the Throttle Position Sensor.

2000 V10 4X4
83,000 miles
Don't know when the fuel filter, air filter or hoses were changed.
Ford did the Trans Fluid change to try to correct the problem, but it didn't help.
It surges/hesitates a couple times on almost every drive.
It's stalled one more time. Both times were at approximately 25 mph.
It's been to the shop 4 times for the surge/hesitation problem

It doesn't seem to be the crank position sensor, since I just had it replaced today and the problem doesn't seem to have been fixed. Although, I will get out and drive it a bit tonight.

UPDATE - It stalled again tonight. So, it's definitely not the CPS.

Problem Solved:

It was the air filter. The cone on the air filter came off and was letting in too much air.

Ford hooked the Ex up with computer that records the Ex info when I hit a button. Once the Ex started having Idle problems, I hit the button and recorded the event. Took the Ex back to Ford and they reviewed the recording. It indicated that the truck was running "lean". Ford found that the cone on the air filter came off. I was charged $27. Ford even looked up my door keypad code for free.

Although it took a long time, Ford was excellent.

Many thanks to Eric Dalton at Kimnach Ford in Virginia Beach.

Also, thanks to LANDYOT and MONSTA for your feedback.

Wow! Interesting find. Glad to hear you got the problem solved, AND for not much $$$ out of your wallet ... particularly at this time of year.

I'm also glad to hear Kimnach Ford did you right ... will keep them in mind whenever I'm on the southside.

Do you know what brand air filter it was? I'm just curious. I've almost always used Purolator air & oil filters ... though the Fram oil filter with that textured grip surface is convenient.

Not sure what brand air filter was in th Ex. Ford put the old filter in the box for the new filter. The old filter had "PZA206" on the side, but no Brand Name that I could find. The filter was rather dry and dirty, so it was probably old. No matter who made it, I wouldn't say it was a bad filter, just a bad Ex owner who hasn't done the usual maintenance....except oil changes.

btw, The new filter from Ford is a Motorcraft.

Update: The Ex has been running perfectly. So it was definitely the air filter.

I love when the Ex is running right. The only thing that could make it better would be a lift, but that's not in the budget since I got married and bought a house. At least I paid off the Ex and can still afford the gas. I miss my Bronco, but this is the next best thing.

That's the damnedest thing I ever heard! It just doesn' compute that an air filter without the cone could cause stalling....espcially when there's a Mass Air Flow sensor right there. But hey...as long as it's fixed.

If the amount of airflow exceeds the parameters of the MAF sensor, then it will struggle, give up, or go into "limp mode." All of the sensors have minimum and maximum readings they can accept and transmit to the engine management computer. Go beyond the upper and/or lower limits, and the system is at a loss on how to compensate.
