I have reported this issue to the dealer(s) a few times but with no serious comments. When it is cold here in Michigan (below 30), the 2003 6L starts but sounds like it is coming apart! Clattering, banging, rolling idle. After five minutes of running the engine smooths out but has minimal power. If I try to drive it before the warm up period of al least 5 minutes, I wil have very little power. Runs great when it is warm. Some quick research has yielded hits relating to bad injectors. Any ideas? |

My previous neighbor in MN had this exact problem with his 6.0L. He'd start her up, and it would have no power at all...then once it got to operating temp, BAM! Full power again. I can't for the life of me remember what he said the dealer replaced/fixed.
I did a search on the Internet and found this:
White Smoke, Lack of Power, Exhaust Odor, Surge, Runs Rough, or No Start:
The above symptoms on trucks equiped with the 6.0 when the engine is cold may indicate a sticking injector spool valve. To reduce the likelyhood of this condition, there is a revised program available for the Fuel Injection Control Module. This new program will actuate (buzz) the injectors for 30 seconds after the engine is shut off.
TSB #06-22-3
This supercedes TSB 06-2-13, which advises the above conditions may be related to poor oil maintenance practices. However, the programming mentioned in the current bulletin does not obviate the need to perform oil changes at the recommended intervals.
And it was found on this page: http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/60bulletin.htm

Try using a thinner oil. Oil pressure fires the injectors and if the oil is cold and thick it will sound like rocks being shaken in a tin can.
Also, the computer will not give you full power until the truck warms up so you have to take it easy until it gets hot.
Do you plug your electric block heater in at night?

Thanks for the great replies. First, I have the latest flash since visiting the dealership before Christmas for my 2nd engine pull (gaskets, seals, main seal). The dealer started it when cold and said that "Diesels are noisy when cold" and left it at that. They seemed unimpressed with my complaint of lousy performance without and extended warm up. Their only comment was not to let it idle too long due to soot build up or something like that. Secondly, I have always run synthetics so the oil should not be too thick. I guess that I will begin plugging it in at night and try that. Thanks again for the great replies and I will report back my results. |

The block heater on your PowerStroke Diesel will be about 1,000 watts so a good 12/3 extension cord coupled with a timer (rated 15+ amps) set to kick on 3-4 hours prior to starting unless it gets into the teens and down then I'd run it overnight but everyone has their own way of doing things
The 6.0 Diesels are noticably noisier when starting cold over the 7.3L's but once up to operating temps they both calm down quite abit.
Keep us posted.
