Back last summer around the time when the board crashed, there was someone who lived near Mexico and was having problems with the catalytic converter being plugged up. He had just had it removed and was going to report if that solved the problems he was having and if it improved gas mileage. I do not recall the name, but the topic title was “Smells like a cat”. If you are out there how did that work out for you?

Has anyone else removed the converter? Was there a performance and or gas mileage increase?

Last summer I had the pipe between the cat and the muffler snap. It was a clean break. There must be a stress point there. I had a buddy weld it back together, but it would have been the perfect time to pull the cat.

Dunno how the emissions gestapos are around you
OR
what the emissions laws are during inspections...

but here in DFW we regularly see the emission police on the side of many freeway entrances...

I typically coast through them even though i WANT to put it in a higher gear and floor it so it blacks out the sky

but many, many.MANY have pulled their cats even though it is FEDERAL emission equipment that is installed ...

most report lower egt's and a BIT more pep, none that I know can quantify it though....

some vendors even sell Catalytic "test" pipes you can bolt place temporarily to test if your performance issue is a clogged cat

JohnBoy,

We do not have any emissions Gestapo’s here. They did smog check once a year in order to renew the tabs, but they found that they were not really having much of an impact.

I would like to know if removal of the cat makes a difference. I have heard stories where they were taken off standard cars and the mileage increased 3-4 MPG. Not that I would expect that, but even1 with this pig would be nice.

The cat on the Ex is quite free flowing and is not a significant source of restriction. Removing it will make your engine run crappy and create more noise. Don't expect any MPG gains from doing it.

All of this is from years of reports and talking with others about it. I've never removed mine....FWIW.
