Ok, need help once again...

My baby has been running GREAT, before I took her out to the mountains of Colorado this past week. I fueled up in Breckenridge which is around 11,000 FT high, drove down to the Mile High City-Denver, and she started grumbling. When I hit the gas hard, she runs great...once it idles out, she runs rough. Really bad at 55MPH-65MPH. I went ahead and added the Diesel Additive to clean injectors, and she ran a bit better. I drove her back to Oceanside thinking it was just the altitude, but still runs rough. I changed another Fuel Filter today...and still rough? Is this bad gas? I think I fueled up with GREEN DIESEL. That was the only thing they had available in mountains. Any hints, tips?

I'm unsure of what year and engine you're running but I'd take a shot at draining the fuel in the water/fuel separator unit as you may have water settled at the bottom of the bowl. The WIF light (Water in Fuel) may not always illuminate so that'd be one thing to check out.

You have gotten a bad batch of fuel that fouled the system up.

Try getting a code reader put on the truck to see if any diagnostic error codes come up.

I have already filled it twice since my return, but it is still rough. I will try what you say, and let you know the status. Thanks for the quick response.

Also, do you happen to have a link or instructions to replace Glow Plugs. I hooked it up to the code reader at Autozone, and that's what it spit out...yet uncertain of which glow plugs are out, I am going to replace them all.

The glow plugs only heat up the cylinders prior to starting the engine and are off from that point out so you can rule those out.

Is you Excursion a 7.3L or 6.0L engine?

I understand that the Glow Plugs are not the issue I am running into, yet I am still replacing them to get rid of SES light. I also had issues starting in the cold weather. I was told by Ford to replace as they may "mushroom" if I do not. The Autozone guy who also owns a Powerstroke said as long as it starts, and it stays in San Diego, don't worry about it. I want to replace to stay on the safe side! Just need instructions....

Also, where is the HFCM on my 7.3L engine? I emptied out the fuel bowl where the fuel filter resides, but there is mention of the HFCM and that may contain water?

Thanks again for all your help!!

On the 7.3L engine there is no HFCM which is found on the 6.0L 2003-2007 trucks.

We(7.3L's) just have the fuel filter bowl drain valve on the back of the filter unit.

We had pulled the glow plugs and set aside last November during the course of installing new O-rings on all the injectors but didn't do a how to article as we were doing two 7.3L's at one time

Lemme see if one of the guys had done a basic text write up on the glow plug R&R and post back, all I know the rear most valve cover bolts was a bear to thread back in

Ok...thanks for helping me with Glow Plug Install Instructions...looking forward to reviewing that!

So, now that we ruled out HFCM since we do not have one in 7.3L, and I already drained the Fuel Filter Bowl, and replaced filter, what is next in the line of attack of grumbling diesel? Just keep adding new gas and additive until the bad gas goes away?

Here's a recent Thread to give a gander.

I also agree to fuel pump, fuel pressure, fuel pickup screen/mixing chamber in the tank.

If you go to drop the tank make sure it's like nearly empty as the tank along with steel shield weighs a few pounds and more of a bear when there's 5 or more gallons in the tank.

Do this In Fuel Tank Modification while the tank is down

Here's a Glow Plug R&R Thread to check out.

The valve covers took way more time and difficulty to R&R versus doing the actual glow plug replacement.
