Sort of related to the harmonic noise I have been having at 2500 rpm's, whether your driving at 75mph or just rev-ving the motor in park to 2500 rpm's. Was suspect of the torque converter, and now even more suspect. Just got back from a 2500 mile camping trip, towing my 32 foot 8500 pound camper behind me. I have in the past heard a chattering noise when the trans shifts to OD at about 1500 rpm's, the noise is more noticeable with that load behind me. Trans shifts perfect, but when it shifts into OD, I almost always get a chatter type of noise as the rpm's drop while it moves to OD, similar to a heat shield rattle that is loose. I checked all of the heat shields and they are solid. Can't figure why I get that harmonic noise at 2500 rpms or where this chatter is coming from, I am guessing both symptoms point to the torque converter, but the truck shifts fine, although when climbing hills when the motor revs up above 4000 rpm's, she didn't want to upshift to OD even after I was over the hill unless I got totally off the gas pedal, then it would shift up. Any ideas? |

Depending on the year of your X and miles on the transmission it could be the overdrive band and/or the torque converter.

I have the same noise/vibration around 75mph, but no problem in park at 2500rpm. My trans shifts fine also. Took it to the local Ford dealer a few weeks ago, they replaced the driveshaft, did not fix the problem. They are completely confused and didn't want to keep messing with it. I suggested the torque converter, but mechanic didn't think it was that and didn't want to examine that possibility.

Think I may have figured out the chatter, while driving home from a camping trip today with the 32 foot travel trailer behind, my exhaust pipe in between the cat and muffler suddenly broke clean through, the Ex sounded like an 18 wheeler when he lets off the gas. I have had problems with the stock exhaust before, another spot on the pipe before the cat had to be welded a few years ago as it was starting to crack, was about 1/2 way around the pipe. Wonder why I am getting so much vibration running through the exhaust that it is cracking the pipes? My mechanic friend is going to weld in a stainless joint tomorrow to fix the crack, will have him check everything over again - we didn't see anything last time. Will also have him check out the headers. |
