This past week the engine has seemed much louder. The injector noise has been very harsh sounding and at a higher pitch. The power felt down a bit also. I was traveling down a very rough road today for about 1/4 mile and after coming to a stop I smelled diesel fuel for about five seconds.
At that time I had only 1/4 tank of fuel.
Soon after that the engine sounded quieter and smoother (back to normal).
Checked for fuel leaks but none found.
The only thing that I have changed on the truck recently (last week) is an oil change (and switch) to Rotella 5W40 Synthetic from Rotella 15W40.
I have not done any fuel system mods yet.
Any ideas?

When you smelled the diesel fuel did you have your front windows down or did you have the AC on in the Normal position?
At a 1/4 tank the fuel starts to aerate especially going down a rough road as the fuel in the tank is sloshing around causing the fuel pick up to draw up air bubbles with the fuel which causes the injectors to sound louder and injectors do not like air.
I been using the 2 cycle additive method for the past couple months which has helped quiet down the injectors and enhanced overall performance.
Fellow Powerstroke owners that know me well know that I do not like straight ULSD fuel.

Thanks Bill,
I had the windows down and the AC off. I looked around after smelling the fuel to see if there was another diesel truck nearby but only commuter cars. Could I have a bad gas cap that is venting?
Good point about the low fuel level in the tank. My commute to work is short and it has been at or below 1/3 of a tank all week. I have been filling up at a local station that displays 500PPM on thier diesel pumps but I am not so sure if I trust the label. It is not the "cleanest" looking gas station if you know what I mean - it might just be the 15PPM stuff considering there is a Ford dealer across the street. I made a special trip today to fill up with B5 diesel just in case. The B10 and B20 stations are too far from home base.
How much two cycle oil is used per tank and what brands are recommended?
I am saving up for the Air Hog system and the Reg. Return Kit from ITP.

If your truck is moving forward when you notice the scent of Diesel it's obvious it was coming from the front but if you were stopped and smelled it then it could have seeped momentarily from one of the quick connects perhaps at the fuel pump but I'm just guessing.
On the 2 cycle oil just add 1 ounce per gallon Diesel fuel,I usually pre fill a few 16 ounce bottles for easy adding when at the pump. SuperTech from Wallyworld has worked well for me and many others.
