OK.... seems my X is haunted. My wife woke me at 2 am last night.... seems the X was trying to start itself. I grab my keys and run outside, barefoot and in my robe. Sure enough, the starter is turning. I grab the toolbox out of the back and disconnect the negative side of the battery.

I went out this morning and reconnected the battery and all seemed fine. Lights, locks, etc are all working, truck starts and runs fine. About 10 minutes after shutting down, the X tries to start itself again. I was hoping it was a bad starter solenoid, so I pulled the ignition wire from the solenoid and it stopped. So, it's definitely in the wiring or computers. Here are some of the other symptoms that I found:

1) Opening the drivers door rings the bell as if the keys were in the ignition, but they are not.
2) No other doors result in the same behavior.
3) Reconnect the ignition wire to the solenoid and the radio comes on. Hit the radio power and it goes off. Opening the passenger door also shuts it off.
4) Remote door locks do not work, but hitting the lock button on the door works just fine.
5) VSS is intermittent.

Anyone have any ideas what might be happening? It sure seems to think that the key is in the ignition when it is not.

Possibly an ignition switch?

WEIRD!

I would start with pulling the ignition tumbler. If the truck thinks the key is in there then maybe something is hanging up in the tumbler that a cleaning and lube may help. That seems to be the only mechanical link to this problem. Everything else seems electrical like the GEM is going bad.

Do you have an aftermarket remote start or alarm system?

Oh...forgot...

To remove the tumbler.

1. Place key in ignition.
2. Turn to RUN but do not start.
3. Look underneath the column and using an awl or similar tool push the detent in. There is a small hole under the ignition to do this.
4. Pull the tumbler, key and all, out.
5. Clean or whatever. Check it out to see how the little contacts come out when the key is inserted and turned to different positions.
6. Clean with electrical cleaner & lube with graphite.
7. Test for proper operation and reinstall.
8. Make sure the key is turned back to the RUN position for it to go back in.

Have you replaced the battery recently??? Call me crazy, but I suspect the battery is not the right size. My father in-law had strange things going on with one of his cars and it was because he was a cheap scape and purchase too small a battery. Anyway, good luck finding the demon ...

Sorry for the delay in replying....

OK, the root cause is a leak along the top edge of the windshield, letting rainwater run down the a-pillar and into the wiring. I pulled the cover under the steering wheel and you could see water dripping down the harness.

I have a couple of rock dings in the roof where the paint is gone and it's starting to rust. One of those things that I planned to get to some day... Anyway, turns out that one of them is right at the edge of the window gasket and apparently it has rusted under the gasket and letting water in. Since the X is white, I got some white duct tape and ran it across the top of the windshield gasket where it meets the roof. Been through a couple of rain storms and no water inside.

Now I need to find someone that will pull my windshield and come back the next day to reinstall, so that I can sand and repaint the top edge of the roof.
