So, bad fuel pump or perhaps, PATS?

My 2001 V10 gas excursion has not been wanting to start for on and off the last few months. It will crank and crank and crank but then nothing and other times it would crank and start, run really really rough and die within like 2 seconds. We had an after market alarm installed about 8 months ago but this problem has been happening only in the last few months. The alarm light does not blink rapidly, just slowly like it always has. But the kicker is, after I had read it could be the PATS a few months back, I would press the valet switch located on the after market alarm under the dash to try and start the car and usually within a few minutes, I could get it started. That was until a few days ago, now it does not start at all but cranks only. I actually had to have it towed home from the store. So it now sits in my driveway. So far I have replaced, the fuel filter, air filter, ignition lock cylinder, and ignition switch to no avail. I tried pulling codes but nothing showed up. Then I read today to try the shraeder valve to check to see if the fuel pump is working. I cranked it, and then checked it but got nothing out of it.... So is it the fuel pump? BUT, wouldn't a faulty PATS system shut the fuel down and I wouldn't get anything out of that fuel pump valve anyway? The whole thing is fishy, the fact it would actually start sometimes and act like it was being choked to death and then die and then it not starting at all. And maybe just a coincidence that I could press the valet switch and it would start again although in the end, even that switch wasn't letting it start if it ever was. I read someone say that a bad fuel pump wouldn't throw a code. So now I am thinking it is the fuel pump if nothing more than the fact that it would sometimes start and die within a few seconds and other times, fire right up and I could go without any further symptoms. It would never die while I was driving though, only when I first started it, or it wouldn't start at all. So there is my dilemma in a nutshell..... First the tranny goes out, then it throws a plug, and now THIS?!! Damn, what's next???

UPDATE: The gas tank is out and sitting in my backyard right now and I hope to have the new fuel pump within a day. Hopefully this will fix it. After I read on the Ford website that it is impossible for PATS to disable an engine after it has been running for 1 second, the fuel pump seemed a more likely suspect because a few times when it started and died right after, it was more like 3 seconds plus of running. I also swapped the fuel pump relay with other relays the same size to make sure that couldn't be it, and it didn't help. I took some pics of the gas tank for prosperity purposes. I couldn't hear the fuel pump working at all and nothing came from the schrader valve so this has got to be it, right? Unless of course, it's the PCM? Ugh...... Stay tuned... Any other ideas on what it could be are welcomed

Marcia

The one time my '01 V10 would not start right up, I stomped the gas pedal once, and then it started. It was a cold morning (single digits), and it seemed that my IAC valve got stuck until I hit the pedal. The IAC (Idle Air Control) valve has often been somewhat of an issue with the V10, and I say that only because I see it mentioned so often in the forums.

You should find a lot of posts if you do a search for "IAC"

Thanks for the heads up....Yeah I read about the IAC prior to pulling the tank and I had tried mashing the gas pedal to the floor when it wouldn't start, to no avail. Hopefully for it to be the IAC, that was all I had to do to check it. It seemed it wouldn't start whether it was warm or cold, just driven, or sitting all day. It just seemed to be random. Should have the fuel pump back in by Wednesday. The two filters on the pump looked completely clogged so hopefully a new one will fix this. I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks,
Marcia

I had a problem with my 00 Powerstroke like this. It started I drove it about a 100 yards ideling with no pedal to accelerate. Turned it off and then tried to start it and it would not start. Towed it home pulled the codes and went to my local Ford dealer to talk to the diesel mechanic. Turned out that what had happened was the wires that come out of the shift handle that turn off and on overdrive had shorted out and blew a fuse. This caused the truck to not start. Tapeded up the wires and replaced the fuse and it started. This seems to be a common problem if you use the tilt wheel very much.

Thanks for all the great input. The new fuel pump fixed it! Hard to believe that valet switch was nothing more than coincidental with it starting up. But it looks like that's all it was. Dealer wanted $500 for the new fuel pump with new canister but we figured all we needed was the little internal motor so we got one for $120 at Kragens. So the X is now back in order!!! Yay!!! Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a long long while before something else happens.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!

That's good news! It always feels good to fix a problem without going to the expense of a dealer trying to figure it out.
