My brother has a '03 6.0l diesel with about 65,000 miles on it. All factory maintenance has always been performed.

Since new, he's replaced a failed alternator, water pump and a serpentine belt. Monday night, he plugged it in to a GFI 20A outlet, sharing that outlet was his '95 Dodge Ram 3500. His daughter went out to the garage for a soda, came in and told him she smelled something.

He went out to investigate only to find 24 inch flames coming off the front of the vehicle. Enough flames to have completely melted the fog lights, lower fairing and bumper. After panic settled down he grabbed a fire extinguiser and put it out. Yeah, happy new year

So the next day, he examined the remains. It appears the block heater caught fire, dripped insulation on the fairing and set that on fire. The wire comes out of the block heater, through a keeper, straight up the fenderwell through another keeper then out to the plug end. It appears the fire started at the lower portion of the wire.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this? I pretty much plug my truck in at night and forget it. The breaker tripped but apparently not until the fire had started. There is/was not excess oil, diesel fuel or any other apparent combustibles.

Insurance company is coming out tomorrow to investigate, already talked to Ford, under extended warranty, Ford wants to hear the findings of the insurance company. Adjuster asked him "how much he owed on his vehicle". My brother owns the truck outright. Adjuster then just said "Oh".

Thanks as always for all your help

Chris

Sorry to hear the bad news. What difference does it make how much is owed? If he owns it, then the only difference should be to whom the check is payable.

I believe the adjuster was insinuating that perhaps he torched it.

Still waiting for a determination from the insurance company as to a cause.

So, insurance company said Fix it, damage around 1500, not worthwhile sending out an insurance examiner.

Oh well, it's getting fixed.
