Hey guys
I'm a new subscriber but have came to this forum alot in the past lurking behind the scenes and got some good answers to problems that i have had in the past. You guys really seem to know your stuff. I have a 2001 7.3L Excursion 140,000 miles
My latest problem....Smelling diesel in the cab. I have looked for exhaust leak cannot find one. Looking for black soot at all joints and there isn't any. The exhaust has only been on the truck for about 6 months its the AFE 4" exhaust straight though. I took it to the car wash yesterday and washed underneath and on top of the engine. Then took it for a drive to dry it off and brought it home and put new cardboard under to see if there was any fuel leaks to trace back but there wasn't anything.
OK this sound a little stupid but while driving if i turn the heater fan on med the smell is really strong but turn it to high and the smell lets up but still comes in...Sounds stupid but true.
Any ideas from you guys? |

I think it gets less smelly because it is mixed with all that air so it becomes more dilute. Maybe the first thing you want to check for is leaks in the valley.
My suspicion is that the O-rings at the fuel bowl are leaking. http://www.puredieselpower.com/catalog/73l-ford-powerstroke-fuel-filter-bowl-drain-valve-rings-p-103.html

I was just going to post the same question tonight about the diesel fuel smell.
I guessed the fumes were coming from under the hood. It has only happened a few times to my vehicle in the past 3 years. I began to wonder if pressure was building up in the fuel bowl because diesel fuel might be gelling up a little bit due to the extreme weather. I do use PS diesel fuel additive but with the 3 degree F I wasn't sure.
Anyway, that was my theory...but don't hold me to it.
I'll have to check out those O-rings.
Thanks!

I have had serious fuel and oil leaks in the past at the fuel filter, turbo pedestal, and at the HPOP. I changed the fuel filter, and the o-rings (HPOP), and the pedestal gaskets/o-rings. This fixed my problem of losing quarts of oil and lots of fuel in the valley. This occured on a trip, and the entire under car, as well as the tail gate, was covered with oil. Also when i stopped, there were many, many leaks on the ground. --- easy to spot and diagnoise.
Recently, I have smelled major fuel fumes in the cab and outside the cab. This time the valley is dry, and no leaks (maybe one small) on the ground. There was noticable wet spots inside the engine compartment around the passenger side battery, wheel well area. The wet spots were fuel.
I don't know why, but i decided to check my water reservoir. I removed the lid, and much to my surprise, I found fuel in my water -- lots of it -- makes me sick. I suspect a blown head gasket; however, it could be worse. I have yet to fix it.
When Bidchn69 turns on the heater with the air vent open, the fumes from the engine compartment are coming through the vent. With the air vent closed, you may not smell the fumes.
Does anyone have other ideas or thoughts?

as it turns out, i had a crack in one of my fuel injector cups; this allowed fuel into the water system. after replacing the injector cup, all of the water hoses, water resevior, and $2700, the problem was fixed. |
