I forgot to post here. I assumed most read ford-trucks.com as well. Anyway, I finally (after 5 years) installed thrid row headrests in my Excursion.
I had got some DVD players premounted in headrests off eBay. Even though the posts were adjustable they still wouldn't go wide enough for the Excursion. So I installed them in one of our Mazda 5's and used the Mazda's headrests for the third row.
It is quite easy to remove the cover and padding to expose the frame. Drilling was easy to. Just don't drill metal with flip-flops on because the metal bits are freakin' hot!
I have a gallery over at ford-trucks.com right now if you wanna take a look. I'll get some added here when time permits.

Monsta,
Thanks for the post. I followed your lead and added some 3rd row headrests. Actually found some on Ebay from a Dodge minivan that match the Eddie Bauer colors (the darker brown color). See Pics in sig. Looks almost factory.

Hey Ken...
Where did you get the "Snap-in guide thingy" ? I picked up 3 2000 Jetta black leather rear headrests I'm going to install in my 3rd row.
BTW... only a couple more weeks until I mount the 20's!!
(gosh, I better edit that... wifeypoo might think I met some young college co-eds!)

Mount the 20's!! LOL!!
I found those snap in thingy's (guides) at ACE Hardware.
I'm thinking of doing it again. Mine are positioned a bit too far to the inside. Kinda like Pharmers (great job, BTW Pharmer!! They look factory!) Not a huge deal as one isn't even in because of the gianormous booster seat for my little one. But it does drive me a little crazy.
Problem is that where it would be perfect there is a vertical support there. Let me know if you drill a hole in that area and if you run into any problems.

Do I sense a bit of OCD? Maybe more than just a bit? A megabite?
In my case, doing this kind of stuff gives me the chance to be my old OCD self ... Lord knows that having 3 young sons and a wife a full 180 on the OCD scale from me, has made me change alot in order to make life easier (and I'm blessed that my wife put up with me through it all too!)
I don't know the saying, but my sons have watched the Lelo & Stitch DVD's a ton and that little girl has some awesome Hawai'i quotes that living in paradise lend itself to.
If you have a bit of OCD, you live in the "cure".
I have some thoughts about mounting all three headrests, I'll take pics when I get it done. Thanks for the "blueprint"!

After a trip last weekend, they may need to be pushed out a bit. My kids are older and lean toward the windows. Also need to add that grommet or something since they rattle over big bumps. |
