My emergency brake can't hold the X any more on the smallest of inclines. I replaced the rotors and pads last summer, but didn't adjust the emergency brake at that time, it was fine. Can someone tell me if it is easy to adjust? I remember I asked one time when I had it in for service, and the tech told me it was a self adjust pedal. I think he is full of b.s. Is there an adjustment on the caliper on the rear brakes? If so, easy to adjust?

Actually it is self adjusting. It is suppose to tighten up when you go in reverse.
If all else fails, it is a drum brake like days of old. There is an inspection port that you can put a screw driver in to manually ratchet the ratchety thing.
I would look at the cables and make sure they aren't stretched.
You may need to pull the rear wheels and rotors off to have a looksee.

Mine has never held on an incline either. Monsta (ratchet the ratchety thing--lol), where is this drum brake since we are dealing with disc brakes? Is it on the differential or ??? |

It is inside the rear rotors. The drum part actuates against the round part of the rotor that goes over the hub. They make removing the rear rotor a real PITB.

I do not own an X YET.. but if they are like most e-brake setups these days, monsta is right.. If the rear brakes are disk, there is another set of brake shoes for the e-brake. If you were to take off the rotor and look at the back side of it, you will see that there is a drum brake set up. So what you have is a disk brake rotor and drum brake all in one peice. now as far as adjusting the e-brake the way it is supposto work is as you back up the vehical and step on the brake the self adjuster the ratchet thing exspands the dum brakes spreding them apart to the point that they are tighter in the drum. so first try going out on a empty road and back up at 15-20 mph and hit the brakes pretty hard, do this several times and see if it helps. Alot of times we really dont hit the brake hard enough when backing up for the adjuster to work as it should or brake dust builds up and keeps it from truning properly. if this doesen't work than yes there should be a acess hole on the backing plate. no need to romove wheel, should have a rubber plug pull out the rubber plug, what your looking for is a star wheel as the star wheel turns it spreds the shoes apart. with a flat head screw driver inserted in the hole try to turn the star wheel adjusting the shoes apart. ((the star wheel will be harder to turn in the wrong direction but will if forced to)) so they are tighter in the drum. what has happend is that you drove your monster with the e-brake on or partly on and have worn the shoe lining down to a point where when you put the e-brake on there is to much of a gap between the shoe lineing and the drum for it to hold the vehical in place. |

Thanks for the feedback. I tried the backing up at 15-20 mph several times and hitting the brakes pretty hard. That didn't work at all. Then I crawled under the X and looked, I never saw the inspection port where I could put a screw driver in there to manually adjust it. I think I am going to pick up a new pair of parking brake shoes from napa, and then take off the back wheels and just replace them. It was my bad that when I put on new rotors and pads last year, that I over looked the parking brake shoes. But, at that time the parking brake did hold.

Ok, I finally found the small rubber access plug. It is hard to see unless you are under the rear axle looking at the back of the brake assembly. It is located at the 6 o'clock position, you can't miss it if you are right under the axle.
I did buy new parking brake shoes to put on there, but when I looked at doing this. What a PITA. I have replaced shoes before on other cars, but since I would need to remove the large black hub to get access to the springs that hold the shoes on, I said at that point, forget it. The life of the shoe compared to the new one it still looked pretty good. So, I adjusted the shoes through the access port and the parking brake holds much better now.
I didn't take any pictures of the access port, since I was in a hurry to get the job done...
