I'm purchasing a 2003 Excursion Limited V10 , and I would like to know if this has any problems or areas I should be concerned about with the exception of gas mileage. |

First, WELCOME to the X-Files!
Change your oil frequently and the V10 will last a few 100K miles. The earlier V10s (mostly 1999 & 2000 model years) had a few problems with spark plug threads, and a few of those also had an IAC (Idle Air Control) sensor go bad, but I know of no other problem reported online regularly that would make me worry about the Ford V10. Awesome engine, but like all others, they run better when well maintained. Me? I change my oil every 3K miles. |

Thanks for reply, I put down my deposit today. Will pick up in a week after I get the rest of the money together. 2003 Limited 51K with V10 for $15,500. 30day warantee on Power Train. Good deal? |

Price sounds pretty good, but the warranty seems a little "short." In November of '06, I traded in my '01 V10 Limited for a used '05 V10 E.B. with 42K miles. Paid ~$26K ... same price I paid for the used '01 in January of '03. Not the best price in the world, but I was happy.
Anyway, the '05 came with a 75K mile drivetrain warranty. Granted, the only "drivetrain" parts covered are those that are "wetted" by engine oil, transmission fluid, or gear oil. Still, I've got coverage until the truck has 117K miles on her. |

Price seems fair. Warranty sounds like it is a state mandated one.
I don;t think you have anything to worry about with the V10/4R100 combo. You can safely go 5K between changes or be really safe about it and follow LANDYOT's schedule.

I did look around, and I didn't see anything close to this price. I really wanted a diesel, but the price difference seemed too great. I was told by my niece, who does car loans for a living, that this vehicle was what the dealer buys them for. Is she correct, or didn't I look around enough? |

When I want to research the "actual selling price" of a certain vehicle, I often go to eBay, save some examples to my watch list, and then view the selling price after the auction closes. Kelly Blue Book & other sources are OK, but I want to see the actual selling prices. Granted, one may pay more for a vehicle in extraordinary condition, but it all boils down to what you're willing to pay, and sometimes the local market may make a difference. It never fails that once I've purchased something (anything) at a price that's acceptable to me, I always find a better price later.
A diesel? I wanted one, but crunching the numbers proved it was not the route I should take. True, you pay more up front, and they have greater trade-in value later, and they get better MPG. But once I calculated that it would take 175K to 192K miles BEFORE I see any savings from MPG, I opted for the V10. I am long tired of a vehicle by the time it hits 175K miles ... plus the rest of the vehicle (other than the diesel engine) is also "very tired" by that time, too. Diesel would've made sense if I towed heavy loads 75% to 90% of the time, but I tow medium loads less than 2% of my total mileage.
If you're happy with the deal, don't let other prices you find bother you. |
