I have a 2001 6.8L 4x4 automatic and the linkage seems out of adjustment and is rapidly getting worse. The vehicle will no longer start in Park or engage the parking gear.
I can start it in neutral, (now indicated by "D" on the indicator, Drive is now at "2").
Is this a common problem? i remember by 1967 Ford Fairlane had the same issue...
I would like a ballpark estimete on what it would cost to do, or is this something I can do myself?
Thanks

Subkiller,
Same vehicle, same problem solved.
At the end of the shift column under the dash are 2 torx bolts (30's I believe) that had worked their way loose on me. I tightened them up and like magic there was no longer play in the shifter and it feels brand new. Hope this help and that it's as easy for you as it was for me.
