Just came accross this forum and figured I'd say hi.................so..........hi.
In the market for an Excursion. Been driving a few around here, but still need to drive a few more to see what I want. Thinking an '05 Powerstroke might be the answer. I have to sell my '03 Silverado HD first, but definetely looking at the Excursions. Gonna do a lot more research, but so far I like them(been a Cheby fan all my life) I just want something big to tow with that can hold the entire family including dogs/cats and bags on the trip. The Chevy can do it, but the dogs get very hot under the topper. Anyways, if you have any advice, let me know.

welcome to the site, here are the general recomendations, first motors...
1: 7.3 or 6.0 diesel, the 7.3 is a die hard motor that has proven itself for many years and more then millions of miles. 6.0 is the new kid on the block and has shown to be a good motor but either way you go make sure to get the thing checked out and get an oasis report on it, its a list of all records and recalls on the vehicle, get this from a dealer for free, they just need the vin number. fuel milege on these without the Bully Dog Triple Dog tuner on it is 16 (nice driving) but 22 highway, and a respectible 12+ towing, however if you get a tuner, I get 22 (nice driving) and 30 highway driving at 55 mph, but 22 at 70 mph.. TUNER IS AWSOME!!! 90-120 HP to the rear wheels and better fuel milege.. well worth the money..
1.5: V10 6.8, 5.4 Gas, here are some of the problems, on the V10 the triton heads have been known to blow the spark plugs out of the threads because they only put a few rows of them in the head, so if you buy one that is going to need the first spark plugs changed, then BE CARFULL and have a mechanic do it for you.. 5.4, well I have heard that the motor is too small for all the weight that this rig has by itself, much less if you are going to tow with it.. so keep that in mind, as well as the fuel milage on the gassers, run 15 average (nice driving) and if you town expect 6 - 8 mpg..
2: when you get your new Ex, make sure you take off the luggage rack cross bars at once!! dont wait, they touch the paint on the roof and wear the paint and primer off all the way to the metal, then you will get rust on your roof.. slide them all the way to the back and remove them compleatly..
thats all I have at the moment, I have owned two of these and the first was a 2wd v10 and the second is the 7.3L 4wd limited, and I love them, they are the best SUV ever built.. good luck and post pictures of your new ride!!
It really is all about size!!!!!! |

Well, I was going to keep quiet 'cuz I thought MadMav was looking for a diesel, but since the gasser MPG was mentioned, I'll toss in my 2-cents worth. My '05 4WD Eddie Bauer has the 6.8L V10. For what it's worth, and your mileage may differ, I get 15 to 16 MPG highway (not towing), and 11 to 12 MPG city. The last time I towed any distance (here to Carlisle, PA and back), I got 11.3 pulling 5,600# of open (not enclosed) car trailer.

Old(ish) thread but...
Heads after 2001 don't have to worry about sparkplug ejection. And even then it is relatively rare if properly maintained.
