Hey folks... any thoughts out there on what should I expect for MPG on my totally stock '02?
Computer has me at about 11.5mpg after about 250 miles driven. Just bot this a few weeks ago and most miles are city driving. I've used about 20 gallons and so it seems the computer isn't far off, clearly I need more miles driven to get accurate results.
Just curious what I should be expecting.
Thanks in advance for dumping some knowledge on me...

That does seem on the lower end of the spectrum, make certain that the typical maintenace items are address fuel filter and injectors are cleaned, air filter is clean, tire pressures are accurate. and a full synthetic fluids are helpfull. , If you have high miles on it, you may find that the muffler is sooted up and restricting exhaust flow.
a practice I have success with is coasting when approaching a stop or negotiating a turn or when going down hills. This amounts to nothing more than placing the transmisison into neutral when conductiing the above mentioned items. You definately can not be in a hurry when doing this. |

Temperature will play a factor on fuel economy in a diesel as well. It will "high idle" more to warm up faster and the local gas stations will probably carry a blended diesel fuel with anti-gelling agents.
I get 14-15MPG city driving and 16-17MPG highway driving in my 7.3L with 200,000 miles. Been pretty consistent with this since I bought it. Record is 19.5MPG on a road trip one summer!
Enjoy the new rig!

What you are seeing is pretty typical for a stock 7.3 PSD Excursion in the winter blend for around town or mountain driving, If that is highway miles there is lots of room to improve.
I second the recomendation on the filters and syntehtic lubricants, especially the motor oil.
The 7.3 responds really well to a better air intake and exhaust as well and you alos get more efficiency from a 203 degree thermostat.
After that a mild programmer would be a nice touch for more power and efficincy.
I have done a lot of moods on mine (also an 02) and I got 16 mpg on my last tank, which was a mix of local and highway miles on winter diesel and snow tires.
In the summer, on my regular tires, I get up to 20 mpg on the highway.
Oh,....and I also use Diesel Kleen....the winter version now and the summer version when it warms up.

Thanks guys, all good advice. The air filter was changed about 250 miles ago, so it is new. I just changed the fuel filter. Running tires at around 50psi. And oil was just changed at dealer (so they said), and I'm sure they didn't put synth in. No idea on how dirty the injectors or exhaust is. Next step will be to buy some injector cleaner I guess.
Will be saving up for the cold air intake, bigger exhaust and programmer for sure.
Hey Jersey Dave, I'll start looking into the thermostat swap. Not sure if there have been any posts on here about it, but will start looking around.
Thanks again! |

Eric, do you recommend the AFE then? I was reading about the "AIS" system or something like that, battle tested in Desert storm or something.
Also what do you think is the best value for a 4" turbo back exhaust?
So many mods... |

I like my AFE kit for air intake -- it was easy to install and good quality.
With regards to exhaust, I now have a Magnaflow 4" system which I really like. It sounds good without the annoying turbo fluttering sound I had with the Hypermax 5" system I originally had.
I believe I ordered both items from http://www.xtremediesel.com
