So I'm rig shopping... The truck will be driven quite a bit by wife but will also be my toy when I'm not driving the 2 seat toy
I'm Looking for something with good space, reliable, not so common, decent off-road, good height and makes me feel like I'm actually in a truck rather than a crossover.
Always like the 80 series Land Cruiser (1991-1997) including the LX450. They are a bit hard to find but the look great, run forever and are unstoppable off-road. But I just drove my neighbors 03 Excursion 7.3 diesel and wondering if I should be considering them. Surely not as capable off-road but its got me thinking...
Lets see:
1. Its somewhat rare (albeit not as rare as 80)
2. Live axles front and rear so easy to lift
3. Turbo Diesel sounds cool. And I was quite impressed by its power. I was totally expecting a dog that can't get out of its own way since its so heavy
4. The actually see 23-26mpg on highway and 15 in city
5. They look good with nice beefy wheel/tire combo
6. Tons of space. This could also be a con in terms of length
The Landcruiser forums say diesel maintenance can break the bank... Is this true? I always thought diesels are MORE reliable...
Also, how capable are these off-road? Diff locks?
Finally, I'm new to turbodiesels but when I hear turbo I think exhaust, intake and even bigger turbo = big power. Doe any of you do these? |

If you really want an Excursion which gets good fuel economy get a 2006 Excursion. The 6.0 had all the bugs worked out and could get 21 mpg on the freeway and 18 in the city.
I have a 2002 7.3L and I love it. But, since they screwed up the diesel with the ULS I get about 14 mpg in the city and 16 on the highway.
I have 153,000 miles on mine and it runs like a champ. Some senors have had to be replaced, but outside of that, it's a great truck. |

I had a 2000 7.3 Excursion that got 20mpg on the highway and 16-18 around town. It had a chip, bigger exhaust, aftermarket air filter, and 35" tires. I currently have a 2003 6.0, It has a chip, exhaust, intake, and the same 35" tire combo. It gets a bit better mileage, (21+ to 'Vegas and back) and has much more power than the 7.3.... |

eazrider,
Did your 2000 have 4Wd?
How has the 6.0 been as far as dependability?
Take care! |

I don't think Land Cruisers do much better mileage wise. I have now started to see diesel fuel in the same price range as regular unleaded (I-94 Northern Indiana). There are a lot of aftermarket parts for the Excursion because of its relation to the F250. You'll save money by doing little maintenance yourself, like oil changes. This is where some ripping off comes along. But if you have a Chilton manual it's pretty simple. I have a 7.3 Powerstroke with 105000, I don't expect anything major to happen to it for another couple hundred thousand miles. I hope! |

You won't find a 2006 Excursion since they stopped making them in 2005.
23-26 mpg is ridiculous.

I work for a Ford dealership and seeing all the concern I do with the 6.0 liters I am not even interested in swapping my 7.3 for something of that caliber. The reliablity of the 7.3 speak volumes to me. |

LOL!!!
That's odd. A Ford Excursion which is basicly a F250/F350 which MILLIONS have been made has parts more expensive than a toyota???
I realy realy doubt that for one second...

As far as turbo and modifying very few will ever swap out an expensive turbocharger. The stock Garret can make good boost and last several hundred thousand miles.
Most do this to there Powerstroke's if they want additional power,
#1. Drop the exhaust in favor of a larger downpipe and larger pipe.
#2. Replace the air box with an aftermarket system.
#3. Add a programer with adjustable settings.
You can add a programer or chip but without doing exhaust and intake your temps will get high and you could cause problems with the motor.
One of the best made diesel Excursions is the 2000 with forged rods.
