Hey guys, I understand that the later series Excursions had an OEM sway bar. Does anyone know if that sway bar will fit on the 00 EX and also what additional Ford hardware would be needed to mount it ? I have been looking at the Hellwig kit as well but there does not seem to be a local supplier here. Thanks for your help .. Rob |

Yea I was wondering that also. And, can anybody confirm the diameter of the factory and the Hellwig as 30mm or 32mm (factory and hellwig) both would be helpful in making a choice. |

This is an interesting thread. Since Ford added the rear anti-sway bar after 2000, does anyone know if it was done because they softened the rear leaves to further improve ride? My 2000 Exc seems plenty stiff.
I did read about the Landyot longitudinal type radius rods and wonder exactly what overly-flexible suspension condition they might correct. At first glance, it appears light spring-pack "S" contortion prevention might be primary. I know all the spring packs are lighter and more flexible than the F-250 Super Duty pick-ups.
Recently I helped a fellow investigate a noise coming from under his 1998 V8 powered Ford Explorer and noted the factory had added similar rods to the leaf-spring live axle. In this case I assume it was to prevent axle wind-up which causes axle "tramp" or shudder and sometimes noted as a forward/back "springiness" in our tow vehicles. The 8.8 inch rear axle in an Explorer is about the same size as a Ford Ranger.
My Mazda B4000, which is nearly identical to a 4x4 Ford Ranger pick-up, has an axle wind-up problem under extreme rear axle torque. I considered adding radius rods, which are similar to traction bars or the Landyot rods, as a remedy. The Mazda wind-up problem is not very frequent and I feared adverse ride characteristics, so I did not.

EDIT:
Whoops. I thought I had researched a bit better on Landyot a few weeks ago. Then I just found this page. It answered part of my question and it is what I thought regarding axle wind-up.
So I am still interested if anyone knows if the 2000 spring-pack is different along with the sway-bar non-incorporation.
Thanks,
Wes

Later Excursions DID come with a rear anti-swaybar, but ONLY IF they were built with the "towing package." Any of the SuperDuty rear anti-swaybars will fit the Excursion EXCEPT for the dual rear wheel (DRW) F350s because their rear axle tube is 1/2" larger in diameter. Additional hardware? U-bolts around the pumpkin housing and droplinks come to mind. Hellwig swaybars can be purchased at J.C.Whitney.com or SummitRacing.com as well as a few other online websites.

Excursion rear leaf springs remained the same from the 2000 model year through 2003. There was a slight change in the 2004 through 2005 models, but not enough worth mentioning in detail performance-wise.[/quote]

To the best of my knowledge, spring-packs were the same with or without an OEM rear anti-swaybar. I am not aware of Ford using a different "code" of leaf springs between Xs fitted with/without a rear swaybar.

A few years ago, some friends purchased a small Mazda pickup to tow behind their motorhome. They would've bought a Ford pickup, but were told the Ford could not be towed for extended periods. Anyway, when I was underneath that new Maxda, installing a wiring harness for them to tow the truck, I was amazed with the number of parts stamped with "FoMoCo" or "Ford Motor Company."
Jus' thought that story might tickle you. |

Thanks for all the info, Landyot. I may run into some problems with my Ex suspension yet, so it is nice to see a very knowledgeable and helpful vendor offering solutions. I have very few miles on the rig combo (Ex + 28 foot TT) at this point. Love it, so far.
My (black) B4000 Mazda pick-up came down the same American assembly line as it's fellow Rangers. They really are nearly identical, each having a slightly different mix of Ford and Mazda parts.
