All,
'02 PSD 4x4 Excursion with some back up sensor questions:
1 - During the summer heat when the rear bumper started getting hot, like when sitting in the direct sun, I would get the solid tone unless I switched the back up sensor off. I figured I had a defective sensor. I have a parts vehicle and wonder if there is a way to check each sensor? Are they each connected to a wiring harness separately? If there is a way to test them and if so, how? Does anybody have any experience with them getting dirty at the connection, water penetration, etc., which makes it possible to do a little work and get the problem fixed with some TLC?
2 - For the last week or so the light in the back up sensor switch has been illuminated and the system does not work at all. Pushing the switch initially would get it to extinguish but now even that has no effect. Does that sound like a switch issue? It is not obvious how to remove the little panel with the switch located in order to get at the switch to swap it with my parts vehicle. Can anybody tell me how to get at it?
Thanks,
Phil |

Hi Phil,
I had my dash panel out last winter. The switch comes out very easily, but you have to remove the dash panel part way first. Once it's out maybe 4" (enough to get your hand down), you should just be able to push it out with your hand. Maybe you could grab it from the front with something and pull it out, but I think either you'll pull the button off or break it.
On edit: I just reread your post and I wanted to clarify something. Even though the panel with the 4x4 control, rear defroster, and sensor cutoff looks like it should come out, it's actually part of the whole dash panel. That means you'll have to remove the radio, tilt the steering wheel down, and pop the edges out to get the whole panel out. I think I remember the Super Duties looked like that piece did come out (I think it was a different color there), but this isn't the case.
Once you have the switch through the hole, the harness just unplugs right off the back of it.
Oh yeah, the reason I took my dash panel out was because I decided to make a cheap diesel. I soldered in a jumper wire between a working light and the wait-to-start light. So now it comes on every time I turn the key...
I really don't know much about the sensors. I've kept my '02 extremely clean underneath as it came from Florida and I wanted to keep it that way, so I haven't experienced any corrosion issues yet. We have some friends who have an '02 PSD (with 156k) who accidentally backed into someone's vehicle about two years ago I think. They have a close friend who has a dealer (non-Ford) who agreed to do the repair work for them, so they drove around with the smashed bumper for a week or two. I saw them once during that time and I remember seeing that the orange/yellow off light was illuminated all the time, I think even when in Drive. The fender-bender only affected the right side of the bumper, and I think only one sensor was distinctly damaged. Once the repair was done, they've worked fine ever since. In fact they were just working three weekends ago because I got to drive it
Is your new Ex an '02 also?

Jon,
Thanks for the feedback. It is an '02 to replace an '02 my wife hit a deer with, rolled and totaled. I bought the wreck, everything is fine but the driver's side and the top so since I could get it right from the insurance company I did for spare everything.
The replacement is from Buffalo so it does have some salt rust on the bottom, which I hate, but at the time there were zero '02's available that were low miles (this one had 65k miles). I keep it very clean using a drive through washer with an undercarriage sprayer but there could be some corrosion at the sensor connections if they are individually connected via a spade connector or some such thing.
I am figuring the issue is the switch because it is kind of an oddball switch, disabling the system until you put the vehicle out of reverse and then it switches back to on (when working). As with your friend the light is illuminated all the time. Now, if their switch was doing that and it was from rear end damage maybe it is a faulty sensor and it could even be the one that is a little flakey in the summer...
I'll hope for some more feedback and do appreciate yours.
Take care,
Phil |

Hi Phil,
Yes, it did that only as a result of the accident and during the time it was damaged.
