So I take a ride down to FLA from NJ. On the way back, after some decent highway miles, many with uphill grades, I decide to bed for the night. Pull into a hotel lot and find I can't back. up. Hmm....maybe I didn't put it in right. Do it again. No dice. One more time, it goes in. Go forward and now it thumps in a little after the shift. Hotel was screwed so I had to go another 75 miles to another one. On the highway, she's fine. On local roads, she bangs a little after the shift. Sometimes on the shift. Doesn't feel like it's slipping and the trans fluid doesn't smell burnt.
Woke up the next day to snow in VA and threw it into 4WD. Drove it the last 350 or so miles with no issues UNTIL I went local roads. Thumping.
A little info - This truck is a 2001 with a V10 and 31k miles. The guy that owned it never really drove it and never towed with it. He's my next door neighbor.
I know it's not the u-joints so I'm thinking torque converter but anyone else has ideas?? |

The early SuperDuty truck automatic transmissions had a LOT of failures. It was the main reason for me to get rid of my '01 for an '05 model. You are now experiencing the early signals of a pending doom. I highly advise that you get that transmission serviced BEFORE it leaves you stranded somewhere ... and it will "dump you" at slow to no speed. |

I'm in with Landyot on that one. My 1st tranny went at 70k miles. Only noticed an occasional hard shift, nothing else. Going down the highway I had no problems. Pulled off at an exit and when I stopped and started to head to the gas station, it sounded like someone had thrown nuts and bolts in it--it was a horrific sound. I gassed up, headed to the on ramp. The tranny jumped to 3rd and was quiet as a mouse but slowing down presented same scenario with lower gears. I drove 300 miles now stop right to the dealer, did the key drop and went home. When the dealer serviced the transmission, they showed me the 1st gear. It had a crack running right down the middle. It was the old mechanics line of "I've never seen that before!" I would go straight to your local transmission shop or dealer before you have to have a tow. |

Reviving the dead a bit here.
A couple of days after this episode, I had the OL take it to a reputable shop locally to see if they could find the problem. She said on the drive there, the issue went away on it's own. The shop of course, found nothing too. Fast forward to today and now with 41k miles, the problem is back.
Jeez........ |

Wonder if it could be the torque convertor. You may have already done this but I would have a complete fluid/filter change and the torque convertor flushed. With that few a miles and that much down time, no telling what kind of crud might have crystallized in there. I know--fluid shouldn't do that but....... Barring that solving it, I'd have it rebuilt, changed or serviced as I can promise you that little biatch WILL croak on you--just a matter of when. Thumps and transmissions do not mix well. |

My '05 has been flawless, but when I had the fluid and filter changed in my '01, the shop saved me a small bag of bits and pieces they found in the transmission pan. One of those parts was a flat-style roller bearing cage. Who knows where the needle bearings wound up? Oddly enough, I drove it cross country and back without a problem ... it took a couple years before she started feeling "different," and that's when I traded her in.
I changed my own filter and fluid in the '05, and the fluid looked and smelled good. Well, as good as transmission could smell. I'll just say it hasn't displayed any bad conditions. |
