My X will be on its 3rd transmission as of tomorrow. Transmission #2 went out last week.

First transmission died at 87,000 miles
Second transmission died at 220,000 miles (133,000 miles on it!)

Third transmission comes with a 3-year, 100,000 mile warranty. I'm looking to get another 100,000 miles out of the X before retiring it. Crossing my fingers that this is the last major repair for a while.

If you dont have one yet look at diesite.com and get the trany filter kit. Worth every penny if you ask me. Im 200K still on 1st tranny. 02X I drain the fluid from pan every 15K. Ive had the aftermarket filter on since truck has 25K on it. Dropped the pan at 100K to change the internal filter and again at 200K. It looked brand spankin new both times replaced. Pan was near new almost no varnish in the pan. Also I am running mobil 1 syn ATF fluid. Ive also been adding the lucas additive for the tranny. Call it luck bs or hogwash but hey it seems to work. Also, you might look into which its sound the Ford HD tranny which carries the warr your talking about. That filter will will do a heck of a lot more that the internal one. Ford recommend and will install a magnifine filter inline to honor the warranty. Its purpose is to catch any left over clutch material IE metal shavings from the last naded tranny. Keep truckin!

I run the dieselsite.com trans filter. I previously ran Amsoil synthetic ATF but now am running whatever the dealer put in.

Just trying to hit 300K then the X goes into semi-retirement as a weekend yardwork/junk hauling vehicle.

I'm curious what you're considering to replace the X once is retired. I haven't been overly impressed with current offerings except for two. The first choice is the IH CXT, but it's beyond my price range ... plus it's totally impractical ... still, I want one. The other is the F150 Raptor ... it's starting to appeal to me a bit.

Honestly, I have no idea. I'm hoping in a few years (whenever the X hits 300K) there will be a great diesel SUV option available that is of comparable size and versatility to the X.

We're getting ready to move to Atlanta, GA, so daily-driving is going to drastically change compared to what it's like in Greensboro, NC. This will no doubt have an effect on what we consider replacing the X with in the future.

I'm just a greenhorn EX owner (3 weeks) but can't say enough about its utility, size and capacity. Like you, I keep thinking one of the auto companies will introduce a similar, diesel powered vehicle. It would be great to see a rebirth of the Excursion.

In the meantime, here's a link to a company in OK that builds (rebuilds) new Excursions. You're probably aware of this company but if you haven't seen the website - check them out. Their EX's are awesome.
