Looking at this ex with avout 100K on it. Would buy from a Ford dealer where it was bought and serviced. Last customer used it on a daily drive. Seems to be in great shape. I would be a new diesel owner buying to handle our future camping needs and family of 6. My 06 Sequioa stuggles with a 5500lb load and I think we are maxing the 6200 capacity.
What advice would you have for me? A little nervouse about being a first time diesel owner and don't want to make a mistake, but this is a geat truck and it would suit our needs and handle most all that come. I think fro what I read from you guys the later modle 6.0s had less issues, and I figure this guy ran it enought to find most of them. Getting an Oasis report from dealer as you all suggested to others.
Thanks |

Researched and heard same thing about 6.0 diesels. I know to stay away from 03 models. Google 7.3 & 6.0 ford diesels. There is a video explaining everything about engines and buying one from guy in Georgia. This guy is extremely knowledgeable about them and I even called about some advice and he was helpful. I think the gas mileage on 6.0 is not near as good as 7.3. Hope this helps. Don't buy a nightmare |

I've had a different milage experience with My '05 Ex. Luckily got the last year AND month of production. My F-250, 01 Super duty in 7.3 would get 16 (best) on Hwy. My Ex can get up to 19 with the wind behind her (yes, it makes a difference), but she gets 13.5 city and around 18 Hwy. normally and is 4x4.
Only have the cold air induction kit with no chip/no exhaust. 2ndwind; Being a later model, I would go with it. Previous owner had the EGR valve replace at 50K, I currently have 80K+ on mine with zero issues thus far...
Also, search Radius Rods and get a set, best mod ever...
Cheers,

Well if you do get the Excursion you will have no problem with the camping, I have the 7.3 and my RV is a 40 foot 12000 pounder with 3 slidouts, and she pulls it with style..
This is what gets me, Ford did not advertise this truck right. This is how it looked on the TV
excursion, big, slow, hard to park, BUT HEY, its on sale right now with no money down and 1500 cash back!!!
this is how they should have advertised it..
EXCURSION, If you have a big family and you liked to travel, if you have dogs, and you need a luxury car that can pull 12000 pounds and get you 20 mpg, then you need to come look at the biggest SUV EVER!!! you can play of work like a real man,, LOL...
sequioa?? thats not right!! get the Ex and never worry again!!
It really is all about size!!!!!! |

Thanks all! Getting the last info on it form the dealer to see if there are any hidden truths. I like the fact that is was bought and serviced there. I'll research radius rods DReaux. I guess that is for handling?
The Sequioa was my wifes, now that she is in a mini van, I can get rid of it !!!
From the info. here, I should be able to manage it in the winters. Sounds straght forward with keeping a tank at least 1/2 full and some additive to prevent gel. Any advice on additives. Thanks again. Hopefully I will be able to post a pic. soon. |

Here are the know issues with the 6.0L motor.
Head Gasket Blow, fix is apr studs which is exoensive
EGR Delete Kit need to be installed
FiCM (fuel injection control module) goes bad often maybe they finally figure a fix for the remans I know swamps diesel sells ones that suppose to solve the issue.
After you address the to main things Head studs and EGR the motor is pretty solid.
Now with that milage
Here is a general list of stuff that wears out
Shocks
Ball Joints
Check the auto hubs and make sure they work in both auto mode and manual
U joints on drive shaft
If the tranny was serviced like clock work you should be fine
Front and rear diff should have been service in not service them
Myself, I would stay away from the 6.0 unless the head gaskets were replaced and the proper studs were put in place.
Bought my 02 new with the 7.3Land Im over 200K. Only 2000 in repairs since out of warranty. Maintenace I dont figure in to this. Still on same original tranny. It gets service like my life was on the line. Anywho....
Just make sure you do your home work on these. Oil changes 100 bucks DIY price, Transmission service needs to be done like clock work, coolant unless you change over to extended life coolant. As long as you keep the maintenace up on the truck you should be fine. Not trying to spook you, but read and do as much reasearch as possible. So, you know what your getting into.
Nothing on this truck is cheap when it breaks. So, if your not the kind of guy who can turn a wrench then this might not be for you. Unless you can afford to pay the stealer the prices they charge. just my 2 cents. Either way you go good luck,.
Also a good place to look at for info Is www*thedieselstop*dot*com/forums/ for get that its an excursion just go to the 6.0L section. And the guy in georgia has good tips, but some things take with a grain of salt. Additive wise, im using 2 cycle oil ashless from wally world, and diesel kleen.
You can search online about the 2 cycle oil. Yes,, I did say 2 cycle oil, but it has to be the stuff from walmart. Youll see if you search on it. Im getting mpg wise no chip, all stock hwy 18-20 city 12-14. With my 5400 boat I get 13-15. 15 if the wind is behine me
Only thing I would add to the truck is a coolant filter and transmission filter. |

If you're not certain about getting a diesel, why not consider the V10? True, the V10 gets worse MPG, but the numbers I crunched said I'd have to put at least 175K miles on a diesel before I start realizing any savings from the better MPG. And besides, I've only put 43K miles on my '05 V10 in the last 4-1/2 years (65K miles total on the X), and I'm starting to grow tired of it ... want a different vehicle now. |

I got my first Diesel this past August. 2005 Ex LTD 4x4 6.0L PSD w/ 150K. I took it in and had all the fluids changed, an engine block heater installed, 3 1/2 FabTech lift, Banks Power Big Hoss Bundle installed. I have the Radius Rods, and the Hellwig anti-sway bars are "in the mail". Before I start towing anything serious, I am having a Banks billet torque converter installed.
I have nothing but a slew of "OH HELLS YEH" to say about what the Banks system has done for my Ex. It cost a little money, but I can either run it in economy, or balls to the wall, in the touch of a button. In economy mode, this system will pay for itself in about 2 years in gas mileage improvement. This system also controls your entire computer, which helps in safe & efficient towing. The torque converter will greatly improve your towing capability. research it... a little money now, is much better than a lot of money later. As for the Banks system, you can also purchase it a piece at a time. Diesels need lots of cold O2 rich air, and Banks provides just that. In fact, my mechanic drove it to all his fellow mechanic buddies in town, to show it off.
Hope this helps...

Check out Rev-X at www.puredieselpower.com
This is the newest kid on the block in 6.0L PSD oil additives. It is in this month's edition of 8 Lug Magazine. (Rev-X also sells fuel additives) I live in WY, where the winters are BRUTAL ! I use fuel additives, year-round. I have used Stanadyne products up until this point. They have done me right.
