My wife reported to me the other day that the pulsating is back when she applies the brakes. The damn things have been on there for about 15K. It cannot be anything else as most stuff was replaced after the wreck. Plus it didn't do it after I got it back.
Really pisses me off since I am trying to sell it. (I will be getting a PSD Excursion over here.)
I really think that it is due to the dickhead (sorry) at the gargage who put on the front wheels with a freaking impact wrench....

Sorry to hear that. I would try contacting the company. Maybe they will work with you.
As an aside, why the use of profanity? I see it less often here than some sites, but it bothers me just the same. I don't mean to pick on you, Ken, but I felt compelled to say something. Maybe I'm just a prude or a wimp, but it makes me feel less civilized when used. Not to say that I haven't let a curse word slip due to anger or frustration before, but I take extreme care to temper my self in public.

Since this discussion has surfaced, mine are warped too. This happened to me after 20,000 miles. I e-mailed ART and the response from Dean was the following:
"The best way for you to remedy the situation would be to have the rotor
checked with a dial indicator while the rotor is still installed on the hub.
If you find the rotor is out of round have it turned on the truck. This can
be done if the shop has an on the vehicle lathe. Next would be to inspect
the brake pads to see if you have even wear on the inboard and outboard pad.
If there is a difference in wear between the two you may have a sticky
caliper or the mounting hardware was not properly lubricated. This situation
will cause either the inboard or outboard pad to ride on the rotor at all
times causing excessive heat. We have sold hundreds of rotors for the
Excursions and have not had any rotors warp yet, so you may have other
issues causing the problem. Keep me informed.
I would be a good idea to use a caliper to measure pad wear. This will
give us an accurate picture of what is happening. If the outboard pad has
less material than the inboard pad this tells us that the caliper mounting
hardware is not lubed properly and that the caliper housing is not
releasing. If the inboard pad has less material then the caliper piston is
sticking causing the inboard pad to ride on the rotor at all times. There is
a slight possibility that the rotor simply has warped slightly, which will
need to be turned. Our rotors are built to help eliminate rotor warpage but
obviously are still susceptible to it ( i.e.towing, hard driving, sticking
caliper, oversized tires). Keep me informed. I will do whatever I can to help."
I have not had a chance to inspect my brake calipers yet which is why I haven't reported the warping to anybody on the forums. I doubt that there's a problem with the calipers or lubrication of the mounting hardware since I saw no such indication when I installed the rotors.
Like monsta, I suspect that the warping was due to a Ford "technician" using an impact wrench when rotating my tires. I've only had the tires rotated twice in the 20,000 miles that I had on the ART rotors before the warping began. If my brake pads show even wear, then the only thing that has remained the same with the OEM rotors and ART rotors are the tire rotations by Ford that have never been tightened to spec. I think Ford realizes that there is a problem with the torque specs for lug nuts with this wheel/rotor combo, hence the reason for the sending out of their revised torque specs about a month ago. Whether or not its reaching the technicians is another question.
I'll try to take a look at my pads in the next week or so.

I'm also an unhappy camper. My rotors are warped after 25,000 miles. Do you think that there is something we can do about this? How many people out there with ART rotors are having this same problem? My wife is going crazy over this as I told her originally that these rotors would solve the warping issue. |

I have one question for you guys. Did you lubricate the caliper pins when you did the swap out? At 60K my brakes are starting with the shudder and pulsating pedal and was considering the ART rotors. I also priced the Raybestos ea @ $79.00. If not properly lubricated could the calipers bind and cause the irregular wear on the rotors? |

What is the recommended torque on the wheels supposed to be? I have the same rotors and want to insure that I do everything possible to make them last. I will also make sure that I get the calipers properly lubricated. |

Wow I really hope that it's not the ART rotors. I just receive my set of rotors, but I have yet to install them on my X. |

I just found out the other day that Napa can resurface rotors. I'm going to shop around for pricing...my guess is that Napa does this with the rotors off of the vehicle since they don't have service shops around here. This'll probably be the cheapest route that I'll go with...after that I'll torque the lug nuts to spec, inspect the rest of the brake assembly, and go from there to see what happens.
I haven't noticed any excess dragging, brake dust, squeaking, or anything out of the ordinary with my ART rotors. I think (crossing my fingers) the warping is just due to uneven torque on the lug nuts.

Explain the torque vs impact wrench problem. By torqueing within a set range you insure the rim is pulled up straight and even? Impact wrench may have it off center? I just had cross drilled and slotted rotors along with high performance pads put on my wife's Pathfinder(because of pre-mature rotor warpage). I know these were impact wrench tightened, also. Take me to school guys. |
