I just bought a 2001 P71 Interceptor. Drove it home and as I was tucking in some police accessory wires (that probably that powered some police equipment they removed) spark-spark, and the next thing you know my temperature and oil pressure gauge died and are not working.

What are the most time and cost effective ways to pinpoint the problems?
Is there a temp/oil pressure gauge fuse.?
However, my battery and fuel gauges are working.

THANKS

Go to www.crownvic.net for tons of info on the CVPI, This will help some.

Electrical shorts (spark-spark) can be a PIA to find. And that appears what it is. There is no fast and easy way of correcting it. You have 1) shorted out the power line to the gauges [which would possibly effect all the gauges], 2) broken the signal supply line to the gauges [which is possible], or 3) shorted the individual gauge contacts on the back of the cluster. You will need to pull the cluster out to see if the printed board has burn marks on it, and begin your tracing from there.

A little hint from an old man. Over the years, I have found some fuses that went bad without totally burning out. Just enough excess current to make them break the contact at the one end, and then appear to be normal. If you suspect a fuse, simply replace it, and THROW AWAY the old one. I once spent two (2) days trying to figure why I had NO POWER on a circuit only to learn that the power didn't come out of the fuse, although it LOOKED GOOD.

And it could also be that the gauges were going out anyway. www.fordparts.com I would first try getting another cluster from a junk yard and plug it in to see if they work, before trying to buy new ones.

i have a 2000 p71. when i bought it there was a police accessory red 12 volt wire connected to a pin and connected to a fuse on the cab fuse box. you could have pulled that wire and disconnected the fuse making it blow.

as jdmeaux said sometimes fuses blow without looking like it.

i expereienced this with a headunit power fuse just last night.

invest in a bussman fuse checker, read your manual and check all would be could be fuses.

check that all pin connectors are in working condition and tightly connected.

good luck!

ALSO make sure all youre grounds are good, (uncorroded, tight, and unchewed wires)
you might have pulled out or loosened a ground.

i know whoever removed and installed all my police accessory wires was RETARDED and incompetent all my wires were chewed or loosely connected and it seemed like they just yanked the equpment wires out to save time.
