i have a 93 crown victoria with over 200k miles on it (odo stopped at 161k in 2003) and recently ive noticed a straining sound, like engine knocking coming from the engine right before it changes gear, mostly from first to second, but sometimes from second to third. its a three speed with od, and it only happens when im at about 50% or more throttle. what is happening? does anybody have any ideas? should i be scared?

The description seems like the transmission more than the engine itself. Knowing the quality of fuel in the Atlanta area and the terrain, I would be more scared of what they wanted to charge for a rebuild. I would try to get a wrecked later model CV in its entirety as a parts car, and swap the transmission, engine, and wiring harness over, especially if your car is is good shape and you like that styling.
