Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with putting a blower on a stroked 351W... for street/strip by the way. I know.... its a little overboard but I know someones done it. Like to hear what happened. |

Sure, there are several around here. You got to build a strong bottom end or you'll have problems.

yep, gotta build the bottom end BULLETPROOF. when you bore and stroke a motor, you increase the overall width/diameter of a given cylinder, cutting into the available metal of each cylinder wall creating flexing and warping concerns. Stroking uses a different crankshaft with a (usually) larger rotation radius, thereby increasing the throw or travel of the pistons inside of each cylinder. With proper piston rings, you have effectively increased the compression ratio of each of the cylinders. Now when you pressurize the incoming air by using a turbo or a super charger or Nitrous, you have... in effect, increased the compression ratio over all of the pistons/cylinders.
Now you have several issues to deal with.
#1. Knock... exceeding the octane rating causes premature detonation ie knocking. very bad for high compression motors. knocking is the first sign of a motor that is about to puke up.
#2. High cylinder temp... contributes to issue #1. careful with thin cylinder walls.. too thin and the piston will just tear right through it!
#3. Piston ring wear and tear. increase the compression, more stress on the rings. Especially with nitrous. Nitro eats rings faster than a fat kid at Burger King.
#4 Valve wear. increase the temp/compression your gonna wear out stock valves super quick.
#5 Heads... over heat the motor or exceed the temp rating of the head (especially with aluminum heads) and bingo instant warping.
#6 also make sure the connecting rods and the crankshaft can stand the additional energy of a blower.
That all being said, The Windsor family of engines, especially the 351 Sportsman, is an excellent candidate for supercharging. good luck. |
