1996 Crown Vic fuel smell

Just purchased a 1996 crown vic w/ 4.6L interceptor motor.
Filled the gas tank and now I smell fuel when the car is running but cannot find a leak anywhere.
You can smell gas outside the car and under the hood, again I cannot find a leak anywhere.
Does anybody have any HELPING suggestions on where to start looking??

Probably was the reason they got rid of it. If it only smells when its running, it's possibly a high-pressure leak at a connector or injector.

Give the engine a good washing to get rid of all the grime it has. Work your way underneath the car too, concentrating the areas where the fuel lines run. Then when you start it, start looking for fuel stains on the underbody or firewall. It could just barely be misting, almost like a fog, but the smell does carry. Since the fuel lines are supposed to be stainless steel, you should have any corrosion that ate through, but I have seen that happen. Usually, its a crack from flexing or road damage that will cause a leak.

Just remember, this a basically a bomb you have. A wrong spark or flame, and its toast!

I added CAI, NICHE 19 X 8.5 " wheels with 245/45ZR 19 rubbers, and completely rebuilt the front end with poly bushings, Kooks headers, 2 1/4inch exhaust, TCI 2200-2400 rpm Stall converter

.PLANS:: engine upgrade, 5.4L 2v stroker, rebuild interior in leather w/ buckets, thinking about turbos

SORRY. Stainless steel lines SHOULDN'T corrode, is what I meant to say.

thanks for the tip and I will be carefull.

On 4-19-10 I found the fuel leak (luckly it did not catch on fire)
The fuel line (stainless steel) was routed around the steering shaft so tightly that it wore a hole almost clean through the feed line and through the return line enough to let it leak a small amount.

So glad I found it before it caught on fire. THANKS FOR THE INPUT.
