I have a 97 crown vic lx, and I cant figure out exactly whats wrong. Its having trouble starting, and when I do get it started, if I give it gas, it shuts off, or when I put it in gear, it like to shut off sometimes too. But about a week before that started, it started jerking at around 40-70 miles an hour, and sometimes at a standstill it would jerk as I started to move while giving it gas, and on two occasions it shut off as I was driving. I replaced all of the spark plug wires, as two of them were bad, and used some fuel injection cleaner, and then the starting issues came up. No engine light is showing up, so im not sure what it could be. Could it be the COP, or the Throttle Posistion Sensor, or is the Tranny or Engine about to go? Also one of the lifters needs to be replaced, just haven't took the time to take the valve cover off and replace, but that shouldn't cause this I don't think. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated I love ol Fat Vicky and she needs to be taken care of. |

First of all, the 97s did not use COP (coil on plugs). It could be a coil. Or the IAC, or the Throttle Position Sensor.
Go to www.crownvic.net and check the forums. There are write-ups on cleaning the IAC. And on how to adjust the TPS.
When was the fuel filter last changed? Mine started acting up like that, and after much headaches, it turned out to be a clogged filter.

thanks for the clarification, I didn't know that, im no car expert, just know enough about them to try to fix them or figure out whats wrong. Not an hour ago it took it to my buddy he hooked the computer up to it, cylinders 1,3, and 4 are mis-firing. The spark plugs aren't that old, but im going to change them, and if that's not it, I think im going to have to replace the coils. I will check the fuel filter. Thanks for the suggestion. Crownvic.net is what got me here, cause I wanted to post there, but it sent me here when I registered. |
