Could i take the upgraded (chipped) ECU out of the same year and model P.I. crown victoria ,and put it into my Grand Marquis ?

Will this work without any further programming ?
If not,Why ?

both are 2006 4.6 L V8,same engine in both cars...but the P.I has all the shift points and watnot programmed inside

You will need the airbox from the P71 at the very least.
You will need to know if it had the same rear end, you may/will lose PATS and traction control.

the gear ratio in the cop cars is 3.55..mine has differentials and only one wheel spins..the cop cars are Pos traction..

im swapping the rear end for a pos trac one very soon.i dont think that would be a problem.

is this safe to do ?

The cop cars i have for parts all have those old type metal Ford keys..im thinking they dont have any PATS either,

Pats has to do with your steering column and key only...The key RFid has to match the same RFid fuse under the steering column

The Key and PATS has no relationship to the ECU if im correct,
just the fuse thing tells the ECU to start the car,if its the wrong key the fuse thing doesnt send the signal to start the car

Do you have a Reprogrammer like the SCT to retune the engine? If so, you can do all the retune without having to change the ECU (PCM). Or you can go to a Speed Shop that will retune a vehicle. Expect to pay about the same as buying a reprogrammer. At least with a handheld, you can retune it as you make changes in equipment. Or pay for someone else's tune that works.

Beware a tune that goes too lean. Ford programmed the tunes slightly RICH for driveability, and most tuners go LEAN for power within a specific RPM range. Do your research on this carefully. If you get someone else to tune the car, make sure they have had experience with the CV, GM, and TC.

Warning: The ECU /PCM for a 2v 4.6L will not work properly on a 3v 4.6L engine or visa-versa . This is because of the variable timing needed on the 3v.

I believe that starting in 2004, all the engines in the Panther line used the same airboxes If not, then use an airbox from the 2004 models of the CV.

Disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes before removing or attaching the ECU / PCM to let the electrical static charges drain off.

NOT ALL Police Interceptors used Traction-lok or Posi-traction. You can go up to a 3.55 rear end ratio on these cars without having to retune it. Just your speedometer may be off

The ECU / PCM programming on the P71 (Police cars) allowed for (1) slightly higher idle speed (primarily for cooling), (2) lower shift points on the transmission (to get into gear faster), (3) higher top end (for pursuit), and (4) more controlled ABS stopping. All this can be controlled by reprogramming the ECU with a handheld like the SCT.

Simply changing over the ECU from one car to another means that the computer attempts to control the new vehicle like it was the old vehicle. IF every part is the same on both vehicles, then you won't have a problem. If even one part doesn't match, then you start having weird codes you need to fix.

Try reading some of the forums like www.crownvic.net and www.crownvic.ca to see what problems others have had and how they solved them.

Treat you car as a SUPER-DUTY Mustang Sedan and you might be surprised at what performance you can find.

Why not have the Ford Dealership just do it for you?

I was going to give them a VIN # from a PI, and have my LX model reprogrammed.

What are your thoughts on this?

Modifications:
Custom dual exhaust (minus the second cats)
Changed valve body and installed shift kit
K&N air intake

Open for ideas...
