2005 Ford Crown Victoria LX – An issue came up on my otherwise flawless crown victoria w/ 109,000 miles. All maintenance complete, with plugs and coolant renewed at 100K and transmission fluid changed at 75K. This has electronic throttle control, the throttle body modulates via some type of servo motor, there is no IAC valve. I live in outside Seattle, the issue has been occurring for 3 weeks, so these are summer months, 60-75 degrees.

My Issue - The first time I drive the car each day, it starts normal, runs normal, but after ~2 minutes it runs rough for approximately 15 seconds, then it runs normal again. For my residential living, this is typically when I accelerate from the stop sign as I leave our dead end street. Very subtle roughness at first, barely noticeable. The 15 seconds of roughness has progressed to a significant loss of power, but still only for about 15 seconds, then normal again. I've since cleaned the MAF sensor, throttle body (& vacuum ports), changed the fuel filter, added fuel treatment, and induced half a can of SeaFoam to the intake while running. The car still starts fine, fine for long term, but runs rough during the ~120-135 seconds of the first use each day. It has even started to ping (or miss?) during these rough 15 seconds of rough shuddering. I really feel the car runs normal other then these 15 seconds each morning, so maybe some type of induction system transition from ‘start up’ mode to ‘regular’ mode. I've driven in 'OD Off', low 2, and with traction control off and the shutter seems to happen regardless - same duration and experience.

What else I’ve noticed – (1) 2 weeks back I got a CEL with p2197 code (upper right heated oxygen), but I reset it and the code did not return. (2) There was seemingly higher residual fuel pressure during the fuel filter change, just a few psi of back-pressure from the ‘to engine’ supply line. I thought it usually just dribbled a bit of fuel, but this time it sprayed a few ounces, nothing I couldn't easily contain with one finger lightly over the fitting.

Not sure what step is next, do I change the upper right O2 sensor per the p2197 code, or is the real problem the EGR valve, a pressure differential sensor driving the EGR, Fuel Presure Regulator, etc? Those have been other things my past crown victoria’s have needed. We just had our 3rd kid, so driving luxury boat for 8 years is about to pay off. Thank you for your help.

Best Regards,
Eben

Don't know about the O2 sensor, maybe you should replace it. Since you mentioned about the ping you might have a faulty crankshaft position sensor.
See Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankshaft_position_sensor
The amount of time might be the computer compensating for the miss reading of the sensor after the car warms up. That's why it is consistent and then corrects itself, then runs ok. The fuel spraying out is normal because it is under pressure. Dave

Thanks Dave!

Update - Crown Vic continued as described for a week after my post, and worsened after that. I received a p305 code for a misfire one morning. I swapped the fwd coils between the left and right banks, but received the p305 code again. Confused, so maybe I should have reset the cars computer. I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes, and never received additional misfire codes. Issue free driving for 3 days after that, no misses or shudders or CELs. I started to get a CEL every day, usually the 3rd time I drove it, p2197 would keep the CEL illuminuted until I cleared it. This was my original CEL code, so time to do something more invasive than fuel treatments, MAF cleaning, throttle body cleaning, etc. I bought a Motorcraft DY-1040 4-wire heated O2 sensor for $40 on amazon, and oiled the threads every evening until it arrived. I changed the drivers side O2 Sensor. A bit of a pain working under the car, but it went fairly well once I shaved down the the outer-most portion of the retaining mechanism so I could thread the sensor wires through and use an offset closed 12pt box wrench. 2 Weeks of daily driving and no codes or issues since. I will update if related issues return.
