First off I'd like to compliment you guys on the site re-design. Looks nice and clean and seems to run pretty smooth too! Great work!
Also would like to thank you all for the services you provide, especially the free ones!
Now on to the meat...
Many members of MyBigBronco.com are continually looking for a host to store images thay can use for linking and posting on our own board.
Sites that allow this type of linking seem to be getting harder and harder to come by. The fact that you have provided this ability to us (as well as everyone else) has been great. Most of our members have reated a profile here on SuperFord to show our Broncos and other misc. pics here and also to link to from our board.
Well, now it seems that this is going to be a short lived option for those of us that are not paying members of SuperFord.

Since there seems to be a bit of confusion on our site as to why and how long we may have left before we have to start scrambling around for other picture linkable hosts on the web... could you please respond to this with some detailed info for our members concerning this change that is soon to take effect?

Thanks for your time and all your efforts.

Thank for the compliments. We were very excited to release the forum software in hopes that we'd be able to get a better feel for what SFO members are thinking about the site. It appears to be working!

Here's a little background on this issue:

When we starting bouncing around the idea for having memberships on the site and determining whether or not it is something we felt people would pay for, if we could provide enough value in paid-services, etc, we came up with a list of "member only" features. This list includes just about everything you see at http://www.superford.org/media/index.php.

We are going to be changing the way images are stored on the SuperFord.org server. This does mean that anybody who has embedded images in forums, on their site, or wherever will run into the broken image problem. The reason we are changing the way images are stored on the server is so that the images (and other multimedia files -- sounds and movies -- posted by users/members) are stored into the database. The benefits of the database storage will allow us to share it across multiple servers when the site grows and thus the site will not be limited to the storage capacity of a single hard drive.

Additionally, as some of you may have noticed, if you try posting a file with a filename the same as a file already posted, you receive an error message. Over time, the more pictures/files you post, the more troublesome this becomes. It's then a little harder to figure out what filename to use when posting a new image/file. The database storage method will fix this problem.

Anyway...

As we were brainstorming ideas for member-only features, the concept came up in that since we were planning on moving all multimedia to the database, we could limit the ability to remotely embed images to members only. This would mean that images posted by members could be embedded on other sites and members could embed images from non-member entries on other sites. Basically, if you're a member, nothing would change for you. If you're a non-member, you'd be out of luck when trying to view any other non-member images on another site.

Our goal in the creation of the yearly memberhip was to offer additional features and functionality to the site, not take away services that people have been accustomed to using for free. We value members and non-members and want to continue keeping everyone happy. We realize the frustration with other sites and their flakiness in supporting remote image embedding or their complete lack of support for the feature -- it doesn't make it fun for anybody. Typically, sites will do this because they find that too many people are embedding content on their site remotely and thus their audience is not seeing the advertisements that help them generate revenue. While this is not a concern of ours, it's safe to say that we went a little too far Just because we have the ability to limit remote embedding of images to members only doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.

That said, we'll remove that feature altogether and it will be included as a standard feature of any SuperFord.org account -- registered user or member.

As a side note, our intent on the memberships was not to try to force everybody to purchase them nor are we expecting yearly memberships to support the site and its staff members 100%. Like a magazine, they are there to help out with the operational costs it takes to run the site. And also like magazines, we will look to vendors and other channels to generate revenue for the site in the future.

I hope this wasn't too long-winded and that it makes sense to everybody! As always, if you have comments or questions, post them here or contact us outside of the forums via our support link http://www.superford.org/support/index.php.

Thanks.

Thank you for clarifying everything, Eric. A lot of the www.CrownVic.net members have been using SFO as described, and it caused quite a panic over there when the new policy was announced.

A lot of people don't understand what is involved in running a site like this, including the costs. I don't want my membership payment back!
