Performance mufflers vs no mufflers

I'm in a quandry. I have a 96 Mustang Gt 4.6. in PA state inspection requires mufflers. As it stands now, my exhaust system consists of cat. converters and straight pipes out the back. The cat. converters keep the db's down enough that it just doen't seem right to use mufflers at all. And I don't.

Does anyone know if a performance muffler will give me more horsepower than no muffler at all? I am finding that most perf. muffler dealers claim that they increase horsepower

If you insist on installing mufflers, Flowmaster makes a one-chamber (ie. essentially non-existant) muffler called American Thunder. That will probably give you the best of both worlds.

I am running stock cat. converters and 2 1/4" pipe from the cats back. I have been doing some research online about which perf. muffler to buy. I appreciate your input. The faqs on the flowmaster that I have found were very appealing to me too. As far a brand name goes I am interrested in a good sound and more horsepower would be a plus since I will have to spend the money anyway. Corrently, I like the way my car sounds when I engine break at low rps (2000 - 2500). It has a nice backpressure rumble that for me adds a lot to my driving experience and I am getting that sound without mufflers. I think I would get a similar result with the Flowmaster mufflers as apposed to hooker muffler. What do you think?

Please keep posting. I still have time to make my decision and if anyone has an experience to share on this topic it is a good resource to me and others in the forum.

Not to run my mouth too much, but judging by the description you gave here, I think you'd be very happy with the American Thunders... they sound great on a stang. Then again I always loved my 88 GT with no mufflers, but the cops might have a thing or two to say about that

96muatang, I am very late to this party as I just logged on today. It would seem your problem is the state law. With this in mind you should also check out the details and find out what they have written for muffler needs. If the law is loose and you only need mufflers period, no noise restrictions with Db tests, or stock placement issues you can do many things. First is get the mufflers back on your car. Total straight pipes in an otherwise unmodified engine are usually a power decreaser because you disrupt the exhaust gas pulse induced scavenging which aids in cylinder filling for the next power cycle. With a 4.6 (281ci) engine turning less that 6500 rpm you can make large amounts of power using 2.25" pipe and performance mufflers. This is because in a street car you are almost never above 6000 rpm for more than a couple seconds at a time. If you were racing on a track where the rpms were sustained the story would be different. Make your setup a good set of headers, high flo cats, perf mufflers, and mandrel bent tube if you can get it. 2.25-2.5" is all you need for a stock, or slightly modded engine. The mufflers I have had good luck with are, Dynomax ultra flows and super flows. Dynomax has good flow, good idle sound, not real loud cruising, but bark when at WOT. Flowmaster is a proven high flow muffler and they have enough styles to choose from that you should be able to find something. The Flowmasters can be loud at cruise and they have the "flowmaster sound" that is very tin can sounding. Hooker aerochambers do a great job at flow and also sound good with a deep bark at WOT and a nice idle. Borlas are very good quality, sound good and last forever but they are ason $$$$. In my opinion placing performance mufflers that fit in the factory location is your best bet. Good luck.
