I am trying to decide which engine to consider for an Excursion Limited. I tow a 29' TT 7000lbs and 5 children's stuff about 6 times a year. All the other time is a grocery getter and people mover. I currently run a 1998 Expedition 5.4L Eddie Bower 4x4 and am accustomed to the 12.9 miles per gallon, not happy about it, but when you got this many kids, you have to own a vehicle that seats as many as a school bus. I was hoping for a few more miles to the gallon. What kind of mileage is everyone getting on the V10 and 7.3L ? My wife drives this vehicle most often and puts about 10K miles per year. I am concerned about the carbon build up in the diesel considering we live in a small town without an expressway to blow out the carbon exhaust on a regular basis. I like the mileage reports on the diesel better than the Gas V10. I have owned a Turbo Diesel previously; however, a 4cyl VW Jetta and 15 years ago. I know there have been major improvements in the diesel engine technology in 15 year, so I am at a disatvantage in the marketplace when trying to make this decision. I surely don't want to rely on a car salesman to tell me the pro's and con's (Sorry Car Salesman, no offense)! Please offer any good or bad information you can on the pro's and con's.

try this eXcursion sitehttp://fordexcursions.superford.org/forums/index.php

I get 8-10 mpg with 4.30 gears and a V10, 12-14 hwy
V10 w/3.73 9-12 mpg,13-15 hwy
7.3 w/3.73 12-14 mpg, 16-19 hwy
I too tow a 7000lb camper and with the 4.30 gears its like the camper is not there. The moter runs great, they both run grat but you decide which is better for you!

PS Howdy neighbor(MD), see you on the excursion site ! ! !

I have 2002 X PSD. I have added the K&N filter and use a Hypertech Programmer. I currently get around 22MPG city. I am taking a road trip soon and I am curious to see what kind of mileage I get. Diesel is the only way to go.

If your buying a new EX, it will take you approx. 100000 miles for you increased mpg to offset the additional cost of the PSD. Buying a used EX (reduced PSD primium) will reduce that by around 40 to 50k. The power stroke is definatly the motor of choice, offset only by the initial cost, noise and the "BIG RIG" smell. Remember that there are a lot of great used, low milage EX's out there that will save you 40 to 50% off new pricing.

would you consider 100kmiles on a "used" PSD low mileage ?

John,

I have a 1999 Ford F-350 Crew Cab long bed 7.3 ltre PSD and a new 2003 Excursion with the 6.0 litre PSD. I bought both new and maintained them well. The 7.3 litre is noisy, however, I've never noticed any diesel smell except when I refuel. Averaged 16-18 mpg around town and 24-32 on trips, with and without trailer. The 6.0 litre is head and shoulders better in every respect. More powerful, very very quiet, and smooth. I have about 12K miles on it now and averaged almost 28 mpg on a recent extended trip to TN. It will easily average 16-18 around town or pulling my 28' enclosed trailer. It doesn't seem to matter. I've heard some people are having problems with the 6.0 litre, however, mine has performed flawlessly and if the pattern persists, I will get better mileage as the engine breaks in. I also just had the recall/ upgrade done which didn't seem to have any adverse impact on the performance. Our dealers are dealing on them right now and I got almost $ 10K off of mine!!! Ford will be foolish if they quit making these great trucks!!!

What fuel mileage, I see them lining up for 6 liters!! I prefer the reliability of the V10.
