2006 p71...so I\\'m riding down the road yesterday and my windshield wipers turn on by themselves. They would stop for a while then start again. What is causing this? I heard it could be the multifunction switch?

With the turn signal mounted switch they can break down, when this happens they can short out especially if there is a fair amount of humidity in the environment. In dry environments like Utah where I am they usually will not work when the switch is used. Usually the only way to resolve this is a new switch, this involves removing the steering wheel to replace the switch assembly.

You want to check a few things first before replacing the switch assembly:
1. Does the switch work as intended at all positions?
2. When twisting the switch on or off do you feel any resistance or grating?
3. Can you hear or feel a faint rattle from the switch?

If any of theses tests are bad then the switch is definitely your culprit, if none of them are present you will need to do some electrical troubleshooting.
