What's up, just picked up an 04 vic p71 174k miles. Not ideal but kinda bailed out a friend who needed to get rid of it. Undisclosed amount but let's just call it suspiciously low. I'm no mechanic but I can turn a wrench and ain't afraid to get my hands dirty. So what are some things I should check right away, and what are the first things I need to get/ do for the car? Aside from fluids, filters, and basic "any used car" stuff.

Known issues:
Headlight module is not working properly. Headlights flicker and you can pull the brights lever back and hold it there so the brights are on temporarily. Assuming it's a bad harness as the p.o. said he changed the module with a junkyard unit.

Hearing what sounds like an exhaust leak on the driver side.

May buck a little while cruising at around 45mph. Not harsh but can feel a little push and pull.

The good:
Starts right up, new brakes incl master cylinder calpiers rotors and pads, new intake manifold.

I'll get some pics in the day light tomorrow, she isn't pretty yet, but I'm not the kind of guy to leave my cars alone.

Well being a fellow 04CV owner I will chime in here and let you know what I have found over the years of owning my CV.

First off my CV is a ex police car. There are some Ford recalls that the dealer will still take care of. I would recommend calling the local dealer and find out if there are any recalls that still need to be done.

I had to replace a rear wheeel bearing and found out that they changed the rear axle spline during the production year for 04. So if you ever need to replace one of the rear axles. Be sure to count the number of splines on the axle so you can get the right one.

Second thing to check out is the steering linkage under the hood. Up here in the north it is very common for them to rust and brake. Trust me you do not want to lose steering while going down the road. You can get replacement parts, make sure you use OEM parts if you need to do this. But being in FL there is a good chance that you will not.

Third thing the head light Mod. You have a defective mod. There is a bad relay inside. You have 4 options. One you can repair this yourself. If you have the skills to soder and not affraid to one up the mod. I have done several of these for myself and local police departsments. Two you can go to the salvage yard and hope you get a good one. Third buy a rebuilt one off Ebay or send yours out to be rebuilt. Last but not least buy on from Ford, but this is cost prohibitive.

Forth thing I would recommend is replacing the coil on the plus and the spark plugs. I just had one of the plus blow out on me and got lucky with making inexpensive repair. I found out from a Ford service tech that these engines are prone to plug blow outs. This is due to a poor design by Ford and a low torque spec. by the factory. The tech told me to replace the rest of the plug and coil packs ASAP. He said that the factory spec is 16lbs.ft torque on the plus. But he recommends torquing the plus to a higher spec around 22lbs.ft torque. Don\\'t worry if you don\\'t have a torque wrench the tech and my friend who is a ASE mech. said to thread the plugs in hand tight then snug them up with the wrench. Once you snug them turn them another 1/8 to 1/4 turn and you will not have a blown out plug again. I would do this ASAP, I got lucky and the plug did not strip out the treads. If it did It could have been repaired but you would need to invest into around $300.00 worth of special tools to make the repair. Not counting parts.

This is the coil packs I used and by far the best price anywhere. These are a upgrade over the OEM.

This is the plus I used and recommened by my friend and the Ford service tech.

Also check your Serp. belt and tentioner. These are known for throwing the belts on hard acceleration.

The only other thing I woulkd recommend is changeing the transmission fluid and filter. This might help the bucking issue you are having. On one of my other CV I owned. I had a similar problem. I was told that after time the transmission fluid was breaking down. So I changed the fluid in the pan and torque converter and replaced the filter. refilled with new fluid and Lucas transmission additive. Then I was good to go, no more problems.

If you have any other questions just ask and I will try to help.
Hope this helps and good luck with your car.

thanks for the reply. Just did oil, power steering fluid, and coolant. The oil was THICK... so I think I'll run some sea foam then change it again in another 100 or so. unless it's not recommended on these motors? I have run sea foam in my 86 caddy and 04 Lancer once a year since I've had them. I cut it in 3 parts, one in the gas tank, one in the oil, and one in the vacuum system. I looked at the trans fluid and it looked fine but I'll dig in there and change it and the filter. Gotta get it up on a lift and check suspension components soon. Feels good so far.
