I have a 390 that I was going to put in a 65 F100, but have decided to see if it will fit in a 97 F-150. Anybody know if a company makes a conversion kit or how difficult of a project this will be? The truck currently has a 4.2L V6 with a 5 speed and the 390 has an automatic trans. Any help or links to companies that could help on this project would be greatly appreciated. |

I don't know how strict the emissions law is in your area, but I would check that first. Usually, if you put an older engine into a newer chassis, you must retain the emission equipment for that chassis year.
It would be a bear retrofitting all of that onto an old FE. |

The 65 that I have came with a 390 and this motor was bought as a drop in replacement. I just wondered if it would fit in the 97. Is the 390 wider / taller than the Lightning 5.4L w/ supercharger? Emissions wise, I could probably get away with running dual exhaust with a high flow catalytic on each one. My real concern is what do I do with all of the factory computer and harness if I switch to a non-fuel injected motor?
Thanks for any help,

Eliminate the engine control parts of it...you would have to replace the trans too because it is also controlled by the PCM. Install a DURASPARK II ignition system and a fuel pressure regulator for carburetion.
I just don't see the feasibility of this at all. You have an EEC-V ODB-II system. It is going to take a lot to defeat it totally.

I think that the situation is probably hopeless. You will never get an inspection sticker for it. The mods required would be overwhelming. In our area it is much easier to find something practical to put the FE into rather than the way you are going. |
