One was assembelled and installed on 95 police interceptor. It is a completely programmable unit with outputs for rev limiter, shift light, and four programmable outputs (for the nitrous solinoids for example). It let's you play with 10x10 3D map of engine load VS engine speed, advance or retard timing based on load and rev speed. With this controller you are able to take advantage of higher octane fuels, including racing fuel, lower engine temperatures (synthetic oil, 180* thermostat, etc), lower engine loads (clutch fan delete, A/C delete, lighter vehicle, etc). http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/view/7

Controller will work with 4, 6, 8, and possibly 10 cylinder engines running Ford EDIS ignition module with waste spark coils. It won't work with COP. Controller is pretty cheap when you make it yourself, and it is about half the price of a chip if you buy an assembeled unit.

There is no comparrison between a "chip" or an interceptor for your ECC (4 or 5) and MJLJ. Ignition control part of ECC is simply not as advanced and versatile as MJLJ, not to mention it's tunability. The owner of this crown victoria will soon in fact dump ECC all together in favor of megasquirt, a fuel injection computer capable of running anything from 1 cylinder weed waker to 12 cylinder F1 engine.

To tune this unit a laptop is a necessaty, since you'd have to take it to the road and stare at the real time outputs and notice pinging and then adjust timing in those pinging areas. A chassy or engine dyno with a desktop will work just as well I guess. But of course everybody has a friend with a laptop, so I don't see this as being a problem. In fact, before I stole a laptop from my friend I tuned MJLJ using my desktop in my home, while the tune was croppy the difference between the croppy tune and stock ECC-4 tune was obvious as I kept braking traction at 40 mph on dry. You will also need a serial cable, $10 for 25 ft on eBay, and possibly a USB to Serial converter, also on eBay for $15.

So, with a close to proper tune I had the most amazing experience yet with my 4.6. Acceleration is amazing, it just keeps giving it to you. I guess I was able to take advatage of 93 octane at every damn RPM and engine load. Oh yea, if you turn off your A/C engine load will decrease by about 4 KPA (manifold pressure), and means more timing advance and more power, so after all turning the A/C off while racing gives you something. Also, there is no more speed limit at 132 mph, you will go as fast as your air dynamics and gears will take you, until you hit rev limiter (ECC cuts the fuel). I was able to go past 140 mph, but unable to measure speed past 140.

If you have COP, I recommend you convert it to the wires, all you need is EDIS, coils, wires, plugs, MJLJ. Cheaper maintenance, the ability to tune using MJLJ. You will loose the ability to pinpoing ignition problems to a single cylinder thought. You can learn more about assembling this unit yourself or buying it from Brent Piscasso, the creator of Megajolt project, here: http://picasso.org/mjlj/

I also make these units, complete with a tune for 4.6L and a warranty. E-mail me to 4600cc at superford dot org.
