looking for a tranny that isn't electronically controlled to replace a c6 in a 73 ranchero with a 400.
i am trying to find out if there are any non electronically controlled trannies made that will replace the c6 but have o/d.
i don't want to spend crazy money on something like a baumennator and am willing to shift myself.
is there anything out there that will bolt up to a big block? |

Nope...the E4OD is your only option for an overdrive tranny.
In spite of the fact that I've heard earlier E4ODs aren't that reliable, I'd still like to find one for my Torino...just so I can run a set of 4.56 gears!

Might also want to try something like a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Bolts to your C-6, strong enough for RVs, and about as expensive as changing to an E4OD. |

Advanced Adaptors make adaptors for everything. I hate to say it but they make an adaptor to put a GM 700 R4 behind Ford engines, but why don't you put an AOD in??
88 and later AOD has a mechanical lock up in third and fourth grear. I'm not sure about 400 bolt patterns, I know there was large and small C6 so the patterns must be different. Again, Advance Adaptors may be able to come to the rescue. Try 'em at
www.AdvancedAdaptors.com There may or may not be the s in there. Try it both ways. |

The 351M/400 uses the same bell pattern as the 429/460. The only auto overdrive trans I know Ford used on those is the E4OD. |

Is there really an aftermarket overdrive for the C6? If this is true I'm interested! Where can I source one from?

Norm...the Gear Vendors overdrive unit isn't a complete tranny...the OD unit bolts on to where your existing tailshaft is. Not only would you have to get your driveshaft shortened considerably, but the Gear Vendors piece costs over $2000, last I checked.
It would be cheaper and easier to find an E4OD and buy a Baumann Engineering Tranny Controller...but I work at a Ford dealer, and all the techies tell me the big block E4ODs were crap. Food for thought...
