I have read several Forums Post's and Websites about my problem...Just wanted to get some of the Veteran Excursion owners Opinions on my problem ....Im a Noob my first 2001 Excursion & LOVE IT!!... We took off on a trip to COlorado from OKC and noticed the Cruise didn't work replaced the Deactivation switch with one from Advanced Auto it worked for a couple days.We went to get on to the Interstate and it worked for a split second & then stopped... I would try to set the Cruise and the Horn would honk...So I put it in the shop for two days he Changed out the switches in The steering wheel he had that he stated was good ,Which the off & on kind of sticks,Changed out the Deactivation switch on the master cylinder checked all the fuses Lights & OHMD the Servo,The mechanic could not figure it out...So I brot it home and when I run the self diagnostic and I get as far as holding the off button and turning it to on and it blinks once... press the On button & nothing...So I ohmd the Servo it checked out ... SO I disconnected the Speed control servo connector Harness I measured the resistance between #5 & 6 of the speed control switch terminals. Here is what I got...Ihave to get this thing fixed before driving the Family To New Orleans I absolutley Hate not having Cruise ...Hoping some of the Veteran Exers will chime in ....
Coast 299 The sheet said 114-126
Set/Accel I got 600 sheet said 612-748
Resume 1110 -sheet said 2090-2310
Off I got 7 sheet said less than 5
If resistance is as specified, replace speed control servo,Retest system,If resistance is not as specified, replace speed control switch...
So if I read this right I need New switches/buttons in the steering wheel correct?
Let me know what you guys think..
Thanks
The LOST one

Brother,
On the 2000 - 2003 Excursions... There was a factory recall on the cruise control that would cause overheating & possibly a fire. The dealers were supposed to install a wiring harness w/ a fuse into the cruise contrl system free of charge. (You may already know this) Has this been done on your Ex?
Also, not all mechanics are the same. I am assuming your Ex is a 7.3L PSD. If so, I would look for a 7.3L PSD specialist. You may be better served by calling a local Ford Dealer w/ a certified 7.3L PSD mechanic. Explain your situation (if you haven't already done so).
Electronics are not my strength, but I have a mechanic who is the Charlie Daniels of 6.0L PSDs... and he has my full faith, because he has never let me down, nor has he tried to swindle me for a buck.
I would go back to the Ford dealer, and inform them of your dilemma. I would ask them who is the resident expert on your particular motor / vehicle. I would also ask about the recall, and see if they have the cruise control fix you are seeking.
I wish you the best.

Thanks for the replay MW...
I do not know if the previouse owner had the recall done...But after doing alot of reading I found out the the problem the first time with the Cruise quit working and went and bought the Harness from Advanced Auto installed it & worked like a charm on the way to KC,then on the way back the cruise quit working...
I should have added my Ex has the 5.4 V10 Gas Engine in it ....I may have to end up taking it to the Ford Stealership and get it figured out
Thanks!

Brother...
When you say Stealership, you said it all !! I steer clear of my dealership, but I did have to get extra keys made... and I damn near had to take out a loan to pay for the pair !!
Keep the faith amigo ! See what the stealership says... if they take it on... you at least have a 1 year warranty they have to back... which is peace of mind... if anything.

If resistance is as specified, replace speed control servo,Retest system,If resistance is not as specified, replace speed control switch...
So I Hooked my meter up to #5 & #10 of the servo connector had my son push the ON button and No readings rechecked everything settings on meter and tried it again No Readings..So I had my wife come out watch the meter as I pushed on the ON button and nothing...So I assume the switches are bad in the steering wheel then.?...Correct

Brother,
It would appear you are correct. You likely have a cruise button that is worn out, and not completing the circuit.

I went & Bot new switches from the stealer ship installed them went for a test drive & now the on Button works but it would not engage...So I went back made a jumper for the deactivation switch went & test drove it & the cruise worked...So is the deactivation switch bad?...I checked it with a test light has power going all the way through it all the way to where it plugs into the switch that goes into the master cylinder....When I not the Deactivator switch I purchased it from Advanced Auto & this is the second one...Should I go and get one from the dealership & try that? |

Brother,
I try to use stealership parts in cases like this, only for the 1 year warranty that comes w/ the part. I have a Chevy S10 ZR@... w/ a 3rd "jumper door"... and that latch is no shit plastic... it broke after the 3 yr 36K warranty ended... "SHOCKING" so I went back to the dealer... and purchased the part... kept the receipt... because if it breaks w/in a year... it is replaced free of charge.
In your case... I would use the dealership for parts... because you are dealing w/ a recalled item... and there is something jacked up in your steering wheel buttons.
