The stain on my floor is from the side cover gasket - it's probably original.

None of my local parts stores had the side cover gasket, and most of them couldn't even look it up to order it. This PS13809R (R for rubber; the cork version ends with C) was ~$20 from eBay, and took almost a week to arrive.

I washed the engine a few days ago, and I don't want to bring oil back up inside it, so I'm working on it outside my shop. Besides: the weather's great.

This is all I'm removing to take the cover off.

Lifting the upper radiator hose let the cover slip out the front.

Not much of the baked-on sludge inside came off, but it doesn't really need to. All that matters is that the gasket adhesive can stick, and that the gasket can seal to a surface that won't leak.

Later, I got more of that dried mud off with a wire brush & scraper. Then I washed it and let it dry for painting.

The '95 cork gasket came off in 1 piece (which is rare), but being hard enough to stay flat like this is why it was leaking.

The fresh paint is slightly darker and less green than the original faded paint.

RightStuff is gooey enough to hold the gasket in-place even before it cures, so I can put the cover on immediately. With most other adhesives, the cover needs to rest gasket-down on a flat surface for an hour while the glue dries. Ultra Black is virtually the same as RightStuff, but it costs a LOT less, and is in a squeeze tube.

I forgot to put the wiring harness hanger under the 4th & 6th cover bolts, but it's going back together.

It has been idling for about 10 minutes now, and the leak is gone.
