Bought the truck off of an add on CL. When I went to look at the truck on the east end of Long Island (fishing town) I wasn't expecting much. The picture in the ad looked ok but was taken from a distance. Spoke with the owner who said he got the truck to work with his fathers landscaping business (expecting even less now). With most of the pick up trucks in the area being used by fishermen in and out of salt water every day and the current owner using a 1/2 ton F-150 for landscaping my expectation aren't very high, but it's a nice day for a ride out east and he is only asking $1990. I plan on offering $1500, after all it's been listed for over a month.
I get to the truck and it is covered with 6 inches of snow. The sides have a couple little scratches and dings but it is intact, the tailgate is actually straight and aside from a small dent above the stainless trim panel it's clean and rust free. I continue walking around as the seller clears the snow from the hood and "tries to start the engine". Only light surface rust on the frame and underside of the truck, no scaling. No major dents on the body all of the trim is in place and absolutely no rot or blistering paint anywhere not even over the rear wheels.
Seller cranks the engine over a few times, I hear it wants to start but he stops to finish clearing the snow. I open the drivers door and turn the key and it fires up. It wakes up a little cranky coughing a little after it's month long slumber with almost dry gas tanks of the cheapest 87 octane gasoline that has the added bonus of 10% ethanol that has probably phased out so it hits the pump and injectors first.
After it clears it's throat and begins to warm up at a normal high idle, I notice the interior of the truck. Nice and clean, a couple of cheap floor mats over the original tan carpeting. nice cloth seats. I lift the floor mate on the drivers side expecting the usual hole worn through the carpet by the gas peddle. Wow the carpet actually isn't worn out. I look a little closer, the carpet is actually in pretty good shape. I look closer at the seats, no rips, no stains, nice fold down armrest (wait a minute that isn't a bench or a 60/40, its 2 reclining buckets with a small seat that fold down into a console with a compartment and cup holders with a roll up cover that works) The cab of this truck is in really nice shape for the age of the truck.
Time to take a little test ride. We will find out right away if the 4x4 works the driveway is only half cleared and it's about a 25-35 degree angle 100 feet to the street below. I tell the seller, "you can take it down to the street, then I'll try it out." A quick trip around the block in 4 high on the packed snow covered roads and I am beginning to become impressed. Stop put it in drive and put my foot to the floor and she hops right up and takes off straight as an arrow. Not bad considering it's got worn out, under inflated tires and less than a gallon of stale old lawnmower gas in the tank.
He's asking $1990, I've been watching the ad for over a month, I was thinking on the way out my top offer is going to be S1500 if the truck is even worth an offer. The seller seems like a nice guy he told me about the temp indicator not working and the occasional blown fuse for the speedometer if you load the bed too much. I offer him $1800 cash and he signs the title over to me. I tell him to clean his stuff out of the cab and I will get it registered and pick it up Monday.
I can't believe I just bought an 18 year old F-150 from a landscaper in a fishing village!
I get off of work early on Monday head straight to the insurance agent for Id cards and I'm off to face the dreaded lines at DMV. Here goes two hours of wasted life I think to myself. I call my friend who is giving me a ride out to get the truck as well as riding me for buying a pick up from a landscaper in a fishing village ( I think the words he used were "idiot", "moron", "sucker"). I get the paperwork from the clerk at DMV and the # I have to wait for them to call. I stand at the counter and start writing and the first # I hear called is C811. I look at my ticket #, C812! I start writing as fast as I can and before I can fill out the paperwork I am at the counter, this has to be a record, in and out of DMV in less than 10 min.
Off to get my new truck! Of course it comes at a price, listening to my friend abuse me for an hour long ride (in his Chevy to boot). I just keep repeating to him, "Wait till you see this truck!"
We get to the truck, I put the plates on it, put a couple of gallons of fresh gas in it, while my friend looks it over. He looks and looks then say's, "It looks ok but you still have to get it back home, I'll follow you in case you break down."
Start off easy heading through the winding roads. The truck is sounding better and better and everything feels pretty tight. First stop a good gas station and 5 gallons of premium gas in each tank (don't want to fill up in case the pump or tank has problems) then on to the highway to see what this 302 can do and how the truck handles.
The truck runs smooth, tracks straight, both tanks working fine and the motor is really loving the fresh high octane gas. Set the cruise control for 65 and check out the sound system. I am really liking this truck. I move to the left lane to allow a new Chevy pick up to merge on to the highway, still on cruise control and planning to slide back to the right after I pass the entrance ramp. Put on the directional, check the mirror and what do I see? The damn Chevy I just moved over for speed up and set himself right in my hip pocket then match my speed. What a jerk, let's see what this trucks got.
I jump on the gas and the truck goes from 65 to about 80 effortlessly and the Chevy is where it belongs, fading away in the rear view mirror.
Once I get the truck home, and after my friend finishes a large serving of "Crow" we both go through the truck a little closer becoming more impressed by the minute. I check the oil, which has 5000 miles on it according to the sticker on the windshield, wipe the stick on my finger and see that the oil is still clear and clean. Check the transmission fluid, same thing. My friend goes over and checks the exhaust, wipe the inside of the tailpipe and says, " you have a little dirt and moisture coming out of the exhaust but it wiped right off my finger." Then he told me to go play the lottery! After he finished dining on the last of his earlier words he said, " You did really great! You probably found the only truck in that area worth buying and you paid half of what it's worth"
Back in the truck I go, gas station again fill the tank and off to King's Park to look at a set of tires I found on CL. BF Goodrich Long Trail Radial A/T mounted and balance on F-150 rims. Another 30 min ride in the truck and loving every minute. This is starting to feel like my truck, and I am loving it. Get to the house with the tires, they look nice (at least 75% of the tread is left and they are all worn evenly, no plugs no edge wear) and they roll down the driveway straight as an arrow. He's asking $400 for the 4 tires and rims, worth every penny. I ask if he has the center caps for the two rear tires, they aren't on the rims but both front caps are there. When he said no I asked, " will you take $350 I have to buy center caps". He say's "Sure",
Maybe I should play the lottery. I hit the Jackpot with this truck.
