Tensioner in its collapsed form. Move the chain link gently down and a golf tee or small nail will hold it closed. (Only nail I had)

Note: It takes very little movement to release the ratchet once you have moved the timing chain away from the tensioner shoe just slightly!

Ratchet extended showing spring lock moved away. Note how little distance the chain link is moved upward. The link is a press fit and if you move it with tension on the shoe then it will just rotate on the pin.
