In this picture we can see that engine load as measured by the PCM is 39.28. Again, this is roughly a 20% reduction from what was measured when the truck had 3.55 gears/33" tires.

All measurements were taken using the following OBDII scan to...

First, let me apologize for the picture quality. My son took these pictures while I was driving, and the road isn't as smooth as I'd like it to be.

In any case, here is some quantifiable data that shows the engine load. This was taken while clim...

After getting the front of the truck securely on jack stands, the first thing to do is to remove the hub.

It is HIGHLY recommended to use a new retaining bolt. Unfortunately, I could not find the one I bought so I had to re-use the old one. You don't want the pin coming loose while you're driving around--think exploding rear-end. Use locktite to keep ...

The "coast" pattern is only half the battle. We need to check the "drive" side of the gear as well.

Again, the lighting makes it difficult to tell, but the pattern here is satisfactory as well. This gearset will not make any...

Now its time to run a pattern on the gearset. Mark the ring gear with marking paint. Marking paint comes in different colors, including yellow and blue. Blue is easier to see on shiny gears, and yellow is easier to see on dark gears. Since NAPA o...

Backlash is measured by reading the play between the ring gear and pinion gear. Index the ring gear to one side, and move it all the way in the other direction WITHOUT turning the pinion gear.

We can see here that backlash is about .009". S...

Before you can get the carrier out, you'll need to pull the axles out slightly so the carrier can clear them. Be prepared for oil to weep out.

In this picture the pitman arm that came on the 4-bolt steering gear is placed on top of the pitman arm that comes stock on the Bronco. As you can see, the pitman arm from the 4-bolt steering gear is slightly longer. Although one "could" ...

I started removing the old 2-bolt steering gear by disconnecting the power steering lines, and disconnecting the steering shaft. In the future I'll start at the suspension instead due to the fact that the leaking fluid will drip down where I'll be w...

The 4-bolt steering gear I got from the Junk Yard had O-ring type fittings on both the pressure line and the return line. I modified my return line to use the O-ring type fitting. After everything was already assembled in the truck, I found this li...

Many times I see people struggling to find the right power steering hose, and they wind up using one that is not designed for these vehicles. This is because the old hose has a flare fitting on the side that attaches to the steering gear. The new h...

The 2-bolt steering gear is on the left, and the 4-bolt steering gear is on the right. Notice that the pitman arm on the 4-bolt steering gear is much heftier than its Bronco counterpart. Do not use the pitman arm that came with the 4-bolt box. See...

This listing shows the vehicles that came with the 32-spline 4-bolt steering gear. As always, one should confirm the spline count before purchasing, since the Bronco pitman arm will only fit the 32-spline shaft. I hope this will help someone locate...

The inner tie rod has been removed, and the nut holding the pitman arm is loose. There is no room for my pitman arm puller, so the gear must be removed in order to take the pitman arm off.
