Started out as a 144 ci inline six, previous owner swapped for a 200 ci inline six. Current owner ( me ) swapped in a 5.0 High Output with AOD tranny. I also included the steering column swap so that I could use the factory Crown Vic cruise control buttons. I am using a one wire 140 amp alternator for all the electronic additions and have upgraded to R 134a freon a/c system. Since I am not into making this truck super fast, I am sticking with the Speed Density multi-port injection system for maintinance ease. I did have to upgrade the radiator ( among other items ) and used one from a V-8 Granada ( scratch my back , scratch yours deal with radiator shop ). Batteries ( yes four of them ) were located in the " dead space " in bottom front of bed. Belly bar and frame structural upgrades were definately required in the engine compartment to keep from ripping the truck apart. I will also install a strut tower brace fo more support. |

The tranny I used is an AOD ( automatic overdrive ) that came with the donor Crown Victoria. It had been well used so I naturally had a tranny shop go through it. Complete rebuild with additional welds installed to keep clutch pack in good shape. The two factory welds are not suitable for eating tire tread. I took a side cutter ( pneumatic cutting tool ) and modified the heck out of a spedo sending unit to mate it to my spedo cable for installation. The funny thing is I got real lucky that the splines on tranny matched my drive shaft and all I had to do was shorten it 3/4 inch for a perfect fit. Rear end is the original 4 lug 8 incher which is plenty fine for my needs. I pulled it apart and welded it posi and vented the rear brake drums. Rebuilt wheel cyllenders and that is all she-wrote. |
Notes: |
I got the Ranchero from a friend who's Wife told him to get it out of her yard. $50 towing bill to my house and started tearing it apart. I had to replace one fender and the hood. I have done major renovations ( and modifications ) to it and I am still going. I added power disk brakes up front, Power windows ( Caddy donor regulators ) Power Lumbar cloth seats ( '96 Cougar donor ) Power mirrors, Power door locks, Cruise control, Power rack & Pinion steering ( Chevy Lumina donor ) upgraded from 13" to 15" wheels using Nissan 200 SX aluminum alloys with low profile Firestones. I have also added (part scavaged, part home made) Ground effects kit and a remote start/keyless entry/alarm. I wanted a one of a kind truck that no one can copy but still feel safe letting my wife or mother drive. Since my other vehicles are all sticks I thought the auto would be nice for them. Since it is a truck ( by nature ) I can easilly use it to trailer my other street rod to car shows. I can load up the cooler, lounge chairs and beach umbrella and not have to sweat to death in the hot Georgia Sun any more while showing off both of my toys. |
