03/30/05 | Modification | | New Ideas After a long academic stint of zero work on the '78, I have come to a dramatic conclusion; I won't worry about the body of this truck other than a $300-400 paint job to make it look O.K. for a couple of years. What then, you may ask, will I do to it? Engine. I will put all of my money into the engine, drivetrain, and suspension. Given I have $0 right now, but this summer will be the time for these modifications. | 0.00 |
12/20/04 | Miscellaneous | | And the gremlins surface... - Of course, as soon as we get the truck running, the gremlins rear their ugly heads. The battery somehow drained itself, more than likely from a bad contact or an open circuit somewhere....hopefully we can find it.
- Bought Air Filter (FRAM Air-Hog)*

12/19/04 | Fuel | | Initial Ignition Finally got the truck running for the first time since I've owned it. We put five gallons of gas in the tank, and she started right up. Monday we'll put good tires, a new air filter, and heater core in it, then I can worry about cosmetics a bit more. | 9.40 |
12/19/04 | Maintenance | | Power Steering Pump The Power Steering pump was fine. After letting the insides soak in tranny fluid for about a week, it's working fine now. | 0.00 |
12/13/04 | Fuel | | Fuel Tank / Lines After replacing fuel gauge and pumps, my grandfather and I reinstalled the fuel tank into the truck. To our dismay, however, we had forgotten to check to see which fuel line we had hooked up to the in-tank pump. Instead of installing the correct 3/8" line, we had put the incorrect 5/16" line back on, and now we may have to remove the tank to replace this line, which will undo all of the progress we had made this evening. | 18.65 |
12/12/04 | Maintenance | | Oil Drained the eight-year-old oil from the oil pan. It was sickening to see the sludgy slop oozing from the drain hole in the oil pan. After we got all of the bad oil out, we replaced the drain plug and put 5 quarts of oil in it. | 5.98 |
12/12/04 | Repair | | Power Steering Pump The power steering pump, which has been sitting for eight years with no cap in place, is filled with grime and pine neeedles. I cleaned it out and filled the pump wiht transmission fluid in hopes that the buildup of gunk will break apart. Once the truck is running, we'll see what we can do about it. | 0.00 |
12/06/04 | Miscellaneous | | Rust For the first time, I extensively examined the entirety of the body on my truck. Due to the excessive rust and Bond-O covering basically the entire truck, I have come to the horrible realization that I will have to basically do a frame-up on this truck at some point in the future. For now, however, my goal is still to have a strong-running daily driver. The good side to this discovery is that once it is running, I don't have to worry too much about bashing into trees on the trails. | 0.00 |
12/05/04 | Miscellaneous | | Hose Clamps Bought Hose Clamps for the fuel lines and installed them. | 3.98 |
12/04/04 | Fuel | | Lines, Pump, and Filters Went to a yard sale with my grandpa and found a set of fuel lines, complete with replacement fuel pump and filters that had never been used for $20.00. As soon as I find out how terrible the gas tank is I can install it all and theoretically have my truck running for the first time since I've owned it. | 20.00 |
11/24/04 | Fuel | | Fuel Pump I removed the fuel pump to see if it was salvageable, and lo and behold it wasn't. The outer shell fell to pieces in my hands after I removed it. This also will need to be replaced. | 0.00 |
11/23/04 | Repair | | Battery / Cables The battery cables were disgusting, so I cleaned them. This didn't help so I replaced them. The battery that was under the hood did not hold a charge, so into the trash it went. | 5.99 |
11/22/04 | Modification | | Seat Removed seat cover to reveal destroyed seat. Padding is showing in most places, and little of the vinyl is left. The seat is going to need to be replaced. | 0.00 |
11/21/04 | Fuel | | Fuel Filters Removed the fuel filters to reveal that they were completely filled with solidified 8-year-old gas. Yuck. They will need to be replaced | 0.00 |
11/21/04 | Fuel | | Fuel Lines Ninety percent of the fuel lines on the vehicle are trash. Due to sitting for so long with fuel in them, they are mostly rotted out. What line is not rotted out is chewed away by mice. Fortunately, fuel line is relatively inexpensive. | 0.00 |
10/12/04 | Maintenance | | Rollbar Rust There was quite a bit of rust on the rollbar. Removed 90% of the visible rust from the surface. Wonder what kind of rust / bondo I will have to deal with on the body... | 0.00 |
09/25/04 | Modification | | Starter Solenoid Replaced Starter Solenoid with "High Output" replacement. | 11.94 |
