Engine: |
22R TAP reman black block, with new head and rotating assembly. Machine work done by Fernando of TAP.
I have the orginal engine from the 91, I plan on building it on the side for a backup. Going to port and polish the heads and polish the oil vally then have it rebuilt with new guides and seats going to use the stock valves, I have two heads sitting there that are straight. Going to debur the block, Might put a new rotating assembly but will probably just recondition the original as long as it falls into spec. |
Drivetrain: |
5 speed 4WD out of 91 PUP, axels and suspension slightly modifyed. Going to put a locker kit in it, and convert the IFS to Straight axel when I have the time and money. I'll find out what the ratios and model numbers are for the axels, tranny and T case when I get a chance. |
Notes: |
Bought this in 05, sat while I drove my 91 till it finaly blew it's engine. Reconditioning it for a daily driver and weekend hunting/fishing/trailrunning trips. Engine is from TAP in Rancho Cordova, Everthing else from Napa The Parts Store in Natomas, and Toyota of Davis for the parts that arn't avialable from TAP or Napa. Misc parts, transmisson and Tcase and some electronics are salvaged from the 91. I'm starting to get impatient,
Tired of working on shit, I just want to drive around and have fun!
86 Bought in 05 for 1100$
91 Bought in 06 for 1500$
Reman 22R 1100$
This vechicle is now a runner. |

Maintenance & Modification Logs
Date | Type | Mileage | Title / Description | $ Amount | 04/11/11 | Maintenance | | Soft parts and lube All softparts have been replaced, breaks and suspension. All gear oil replaced for transmission, transerfer case, front and rear diff. | 0.00 | 06/23/10 | Repair | 249515 | Fuel Injection Repaired My dad got pissed at me for letting this thing sit and rot so I took it to Robinson's Automotive in Placerville CA. It's run by my dad's friend Marty and between him, his son and me running around for parts Marty and his son Josh got it running. New fuel tank, new fuel pump, modifactions to fuel pump and tank to adapt them to the 86. Wireing repair, salvaged plugs for all kinds of stuff that was broken on the injection wiring harness. New TPS and all the work that went into timing it in properly and figuring out the harness and where everthing plugged into. All that turned into 17 hours of shop time and a huge bill, but really it was super low considering that 17 hours of shop time at a dealership would of cost $3400 alone, not to mention parts. Marty got me out of there for $1900 and some change. I then spent all my free time in the last two weeks getting the bugs out and tracking down a exaust leak. I also adjusted the idol and adjusted the valves. I still have some seepage here and there. Spent around 200 on parts and hardware after the fact. It's a runner, pics coming soon. So with the exception of the intake, exaust pipe, suspension and chasis, this is a completely new truck. | 2,300.00 | 02/11/09 | Damage | | Dead Fuel Delivery Got everything together last year, went to start it and it had no fuel, there was fuel getting to the fuel rail, the fuel pump was pumping just fine, the injectors were just rebuilt the year before last and stored properly, only thing that's different is that I pulled the car alarm and cruse control from under the dash and repaired the wiring harness. I can only assume that I screwed up when I did repaired this stuff, or I fried the computer somehow. I honestly don't know, need to get a bit of cash saved up and get it to a shop where they have the resources to figure out what the problem is, as of last year this truck is a dead project. I just can't figure out what's wrong with it.
Sucks. =[ | 0.00 | 03/29/07 | Repair | 249515 | Engine Oil pickup tube, Oilpan, Oilpump, Timing chain and Cover, Waterpump and some accesories installed, See lastest pictures in the album. | 0.00 | 03/28/07 | Repair | 249515 | Engine Compartment Really not too much work to do here. Put on my thick rubber chemical gloves, busted out with my 4 year old bottle of super clean(yes the good stuff) and a bucket of hot soapy watter and cleaned it with a soft wire brush and a sponge. Got most the grease, leaves, dirt, grime, ect off everthing I could. Looks alot better. Only "big job" I have here is to remove the rust from the battlery stand replace the battery holdown and battery cables. Other than that there's nothing to do here. All that's left for this project is to finish assembly on the engine, bolt it to the transmisson and drop it in. Plumbing probably could use to be purged, a new evap cannister probably wouldn't be a bad idea either. Clutch and breaks still need to be bled. Wheel barrings replaces or repacked, new shocks. Then see if my brother can talk our body shop guy into helping me at least clean up the body dammage and prime the exterior black, might even put a matt clearcoat on it so I can be cool like that.
| 0.00 | 03/27/07 | Repair | 249515 | More electrical Computer wireing harness for the 22-R has been removed and repaired best I could. Just moastly pulled off old tape, cleaned it and rewraped it with new tape. I double checked and the wireing harness for the 22R-E and it will fit. I has the exact same connectors inside the truck as the 22R did. However, it's alot more complicated and probably alot more difficult to get to run with out the "Check Engine" light on. I mean I'm fully expecting to have to take it to a shop and have them do a full diagnostic on it after it's running. But my hope is that we can get the engine controls installed with no problems. I'm still open to buying a new wiring harness if needed, also willing to try and make the 22R-E harness, fulerail and computer work if need's be since I now know I can plug it into the same plugs.
| 0.00 | 03/27/07 | Repair | 249515 | Interior I'm done with all the little finishing touches on the passenger compartment when it comes to being able to ride inside it in some kind of simbalance of comfort. All rust has been elimiated, all wiring dammage repaired or removed entirely(aftermarket tweeker garbage), Seat and seatbelts installed with buzzer, Sterio/Amp/Speakers moastly installed just need to find a place for my 10" midranges, no idea where I could possibly install them though. Throttle cable replaced. Heaterswitch replaced, Airducts cleaned, All dash componets cleaned and armoralled, rear carpet kit installed, front carpet kit is too far gone to reuse I'm sad to say Floormats are holding their place at the moment, Added weatherstripping and plugs for boltholes that were not used for the new seat. Computer and wireing harness removed and reconditioned. On to the engine compartment! | 0.00 | 03/22/07 | Repair | 249515 | Attack of the Rust, Part 5! Just got done ripping out the dash and replaced the heater core. I then took out the aftermarket cruse control and anchient alarm system. I had alot of wireing repair under the dash too I'v spliced and patched everthing that was dammaged and replaced everthing that was too far gone to repair which was the ligher and one wire that has been cut and spliced a half dosen times it looks like. Also installed a new wireing clip for the stereo, haven't hooked up a battery to test it all yet. I then went on to removing rust from the passenger compartment, only the dasboard support bar was spared since the rust was very light. I then masked off the problem areas, primed them with bare metal primer then painted them with an enamel that will be tough enough to survive all the trafic of me climbing in and out to instal the dash and seat fittings, ect. I did get some overspray on a few things but I'm not going for perfectness, just durability. Priety big job, I'll post photos of the finished floorboards and dashboard assembly. Sorry no before pictures, my camera broke and I just got it back from the manufacturer.
Also I'm sad to say the EFI wireing harness out of the 91 wont fit, I guess the 87 is a "22R" and the 91 is a "22R-E" so that means the wireing harness wont work with the existing plugs for the interior and powersystem harness. I could change the whole thing but honestly only the EFI harness is in badshape of the 87 everthing else is in suprisingly good shape and everthing else was easly repaired. I think I can salvage it, if not I'm going to have to find/order a new one. Also I need to take the computer for the 22R and the computer for the 22R-E and have them bolth tested to make shure that at least the 22R computer is good. Then find out if one can work for the other in any funtional way since the plug enginering is exactly the same I highly doubt it is compatable but I need to ask so I know and I'm not guessing.

50 hours total | 28.00 | 03/22/07 | Repair | 249515 | Engine Nearly ready. My cousin and I nearly have the engine assembled, just some part cleaning and tourqing left. I need to take the transmissions to Midas and have the good Imput shaft installed on my "new" transmission, it's funny the tranny that works like new is twice as dirty and the imput shaft is trashed, but the old junky tranny out of the 87 looks new inside but the syncros are garbage, als has a good input shaft. | 0.00 | 03/13/07 | Repair | 249515 | New Engine, New transmisson Bought another 4WD, a 91, Destroyed the engine, Salvaged the electronics, Wireing, Transmisson and Tcase, Seats, sterio, and various miscilanious parts from the 91 onto the 86.

Fuel lines, Filters, Banjoe Washers, ect, 70$ | 2,735.00 | 03/09/05 | Fuel | 249515 | Intake and Fulerail This is not good, got it started and it ran like shit. So I screwed around with the spark to see if that was why it wasnt idleing and was missing. I adjusted the idle so that it would run at 1000RPM and sprayed WD40 on the intake to see if it was leaking vacume. It was, so i pulled the upper manifold and had a look at the fule rail. Nothing looks good here, went through two cans of electronic cleaner just cleaning electronic connectors. Then I pulled the wireing harness and fule rail, NOT GOOD.
then the lower manifold. thankfully the intake ports on the head were clean as a whisle. looks like the block and heads are newer then the intake. So new injectors and gaskets, banjo washers, and assorted odds and ends. No high lakes for me this weekend. | 0.00 | 03/06/05 | Repair | 249515.1 | New Clutch system We pulled the Eingine and Replaced the Pilot baring, Clutch/Pressure plate, Throwout baring, Clutch Master cylinder and Slave cylinder. We also reconditioned the Flywheel and Clutch fork.
After the eingine and transmission were seperated Adam pointed out that there was a mess in the bell housing. I pulled the front baring cover to see if any of the seals were blown and it was clean and new and there was still clean assembly lube on the barings and all the seals were new. However the cover had no gasket on it and wasnt holding a seal, we RTVed it and that was that.
My Brother and I had a hell of a time pulling the Pilot baring from the Crankshaft. We ended up making 4 trips to town on saturday and still wernt abel to get a tool that would pull that baring. I tyed to hydrolic the barring out by filling the recess behind it with greese and then hitting the hole with a drift that fits in just perfect, but that just blew the rubber seal out of barring inbetween the inner and outer race. Tryed a few difrent blind hole pullers but the hole is very small (12mm) and two of them didnt fit, one of them the teeth striped out on the barring and the fouth was a hook that broke inside it. Fianly I went and bought a small slide hammer that had an assortmet of pullers and hooks and managed to make it wok by sticking a single hook in the hole and leveraging it in, then three pulls on the slide hammer and it was out. After that point it was smooth sailing and we had the eingine in and bolted to the transmission before dark on sunday.
