pattern_coast.jpg Now its time to run a pattern on the gearset. Mark the ring gear with marking paint. Marking paint comes in different colors, including yellow and blue. Blue is easier to see on shiny gears, and yellow is easier to see on dark gears. Since NAPA only had "Prussian Blue", that's what I used here.

Once marked, run the ring gear around several times in both directions. The contact with the pinion gears will squeeze out the marking paint and leave a faint pattern that we'll use to see how the ring gear comes in contact with the pinion gear. This will tell us whether the pinion depth is set correctly, and whether the ring gear will need to move to one side or another.

What you see in the pic is the "coast" side. Again, I used all the shims that came with the original housing. This pattern is satisfactory--hell, its pretty damned near perfect, although the lighting could reflect it better.

Keep in mind that any oil residue on the gearset will make reading the pattern much more difficult. Get it as clean as you can.
